I have 5.5 × 8.5 (soda can for reference) and I love how adorable it is. I kind of wish I had gotten something bigger but that is my own fault. I also didn’t realize this was a journal but maybe I’ll be inspired to use it as such… Or I can just rip out and trim up. We will see.

Has a bit of a warm, almost kind of French Grey tone, if you use Prismacolor pencils, it’s about the ‘French Grey 30%’ in tone–

There’s a few fibre marks, where the dyed paper pulp took on a little more dye than anticipated and leaves little marks on every other page or so that looks like an errant pencil mark, but it’s nothing that interferes with the paper texture or capacity to take color from pencils (be it graphite or coloured pencils), though I will say that alcohol markers do not appear as their normal color on this paper– and will look more muted, if not washed out on this paper. (Markers also bleed easy through this paper, so be careful laying down a base color and make sure you have a catch paper under the page you’re working on to protect the page under it, also make sure to layer it at least twice for risk of bleeding through)

Other than that, fantastic paper, might buy a larger size for more intricate drawings at home

I got this sketchbook because I’ve gotten things from Strathmore for years. Based on reviews and the description, saying this is a medium weight paper, good for charcoal ( which is specifically what I got it for). When I took a look at this paper, I really didn’t think it matched the description. It’s barely medium weight and there’s virtually no tooth. Why would it be recommended for charcoal if there’s no tooth? Anyway, I love the size and gray paper is my favorite when working with charcoal. I just got this for dinking around, so it’s not a huge deal, but I wouldn’t have gotten it if I’d had more accurate info.
If you want this for pencil or charcoal, I wouldn’t do this, but for pen or even paint, I think it would be fine.

I love the color of the paper. Of course, the paper is a bit fiberous but still works well with pigment liners. I wish the paper were a bit heavier but overall it’s a nice sketchbook. I wouldn’t use this sketchbook for anything wet like markers or watercolor pencils as they might bleed through to the other side. Pigment liners do not bleed to the other side of the paper.

This was my first time using gray-toned paper. I wasn’t sure how I would like it, or if there would be a learning curve, but wow!! I love this paper!! It has just enough texture without having too much. I press down pretty hard when I draw, and I haven’t been able to make an indent on the pages below at all. The paper is definitely thick enough to draw on both sides, though I prefer to just use one side. I can tell I’m going to be using these sketchbooks for a long time to come. I just really love the color. I’ve been using it with white charcoal which really pops against the gray. If you’re an artist looking to try a new medium or just impress your friends, definitely give this a shot! I’m including a couple drawings of mine made with mechanical pencils & white charcoal pencils.

UPDATE: Added a couple photos now that I’ve been using this paper for a few years. Absolutely love it, I probably buy one a year.

For $7.50 this isn’t a price I regret. This book is small but if you were a practicing artist it’s nice to have 50 sheets so you know you’re allowed to make mistakes and it’s not going to cost you an arm and a leg they are quite thin pages though. I haven’t experienced any issues where my pencil hardness has shown up onThe next page if I press too hard but they are very flimsy piece of paper they are not card stock at all so just keep that in mind also I did notice some inconsistencies as far as the texture goes only when making pencil marks as if I had written on the previous page but I didn’t for me this issue isn’t a make it or break it kind of problem and I’d say overall it’s not aBad deal for the price you pay

This is probably the best paper I’ve used!
I definitely recommend. I find a lot of people not trying out toned paper simply because it’s not the usual white, and I was like that too. But the first time I used it, I was super amazed! I do wish that the paper was a bit thicker (for example, for sharpies, poscas, etc.) but if you’re used to mixed media or craft paper, I can definitely see you liking this product.

Recently tried another band if grey toned paper and need up having to send it back (think colored copy paper with zero tooth) only to order this tried and true. I should have never strayed and won’t again! This may be a few more pennies but worth it in terms of paper quality and knowing my mediums will stick to the tooth. I repent my straying ways and swear I will not falter again!

Drawable area is actually about 6.0″x8.6″, so about A5 or half and A4 page for reference.

The grey tone to the paper is wonderful for using blacks and whites to draw your image and push and pull details into and out of the page to give some lovely depth. The paper has visible fibers in it that you can see up close, so it’s not solid grey but rather has a little shade variation across it (see my snaps).

Great compact size for cafe sketching and fitting into small bags so you can take it anywhere easily.

I never thought that having a different quality paper could make such a difference. I haven’t done any artwork in a very long time and just started again. So it’s been a while and I was purchasing a few different types of paper and so far this is by far my favorite. I’ve noticed with all the types of color pencils that I have at the moment this paper allows the color pencils to go down smoothly and on top of that I can erase almost everything that I draw on the paper besides black. Usually a racing on the other types of paper with tooth it’s very difficult. I will most likely be repurchasing this I started off with purchasing just a smaller size.
