Great coffee, but lots of quirksAlthough this system makes a great cup of coffee, there are several annoying and bothersome quirks:1) the lever and mechanism to add/remove the coffee pods is cheap and fragile. Everytime I unlock it, and open it, I feel like I have to be very careful, or it might break.2) while making the coffee, the unit spits coffee all over the place. Most of the pressure generated stream goes into the cup, but alot ends up as splatter marks all over the counter and unit. I always have to clean up the area after making a cup.3) I never get the same level of coffee in the cup. Sometimes its nearly running over, and other times it seems barely half full.4) After making a cup of coffee, the unit drips some, and there’s always a puddle of coffee drops on the base portion. B&D anticipated this as there’s a slotted metal removable base to assist cleaning. It’d be nice if it didn’t drip so much.5) I have not been able to find the coffee pods in any local grocery. I still need to order from Amazon each time I need a new pack. But, again, it makes a great cup of coffee.

You get what you pay for.On average, we go through one of these units per year. But, you only pay in the $30-$40 range for this piece of equipment, so you can’t really expect it to last forever. If you want durable construction (read: not plastic) then you must purchase a more expensive unit. If you want REAL cappuccino, you have to spring for the $2000 cappucino maker. That said, we keep buying this coffee maker because: it’s affordable, you can find the pods in various supermarkets, and the coffee is pretty decent. We don’t like steaming hot coffee that burns our tongues. The temperature of the coffee from this machine seems just about right to us. If you like super hot coffee, then this product is not for you.

Great Machine!!I have had this machine now for about 6 months and I love it!! It is so great not to have to measure coffee, grab a filter and wait for the coffee to finish brewing. This makes close to 16 oz in about 90 seconds or less, coffee that is actually hot!! I find it helpful to buy those paper coffee cups you can get at the warehouse clubs and lids, so it brews and I go…fantastic!! Only thing is I hope in their future models they make the product with more metal and less plastic? It seems a little fragile but nothing has broken on me yet…knock on wood. But you should get it.

poor brewingThis system brews a very weak cup of coffee. I would not recommend it for anyone that drinks coffee but if you drink tea then by all means, because that is what your coffee is going to look like when it comes out.

Leaky PotI have had this system almost since it came out, at least 6-8 months, and at first it worked fine. I had a part break, the cup that holds the filter but it was replaced very fast by customer service, but since then it has never worked right. It leaks all over the counter every time I make a cup and I can’t figure out from where and often the coffee is very weak. I do not recommend this.

Coffee good; appliance a piece of junkThis coffee maker is perhaps the biggest piece of junk I have ever purchased and I returned it within 24 hours. Where O’ where to begin? The construction of this appliance is truly a joke. There isn’t a piece of metal in the entire piece. You get a thin piece of aluminum that your mug sits on while it brews…thats it.The lever that opens the pod holder is very flimsy. And after the initial brew, the unit wouldn’t seal right, which means, no coffee. So you pop the lever up, open the pod, make sure the coffee is seated appropriately and try again. blah, blah, blah. Do this about 5 times and for no apparent reason, it would work again.Do you like your coffee hot? Well, you won’t get it with this device. Basically, there are 2 components to a great cup of coffee: the beans and the water. The beans have already been taken care of, so all you can control is the water source. If you are using a machine like this, how dare you put tap water in it! My filtered water sits nice and chilled in my refrigerator. Well, thats a problem for this device. The coffee comes out tepid folks. Not even luke warm! I tried it straight from the tap, and it was warmer but not hot. So if you keep filtered water in your fridge, expect tepid coffee. YUCK. I must be old fashioned, I like to blow on my coffee and see the steam rise up from the cup in morning. The coffee I was able to drink tasted very good. But again, it just wasn’t worth the hassle of messing with that stupid lever and pod configuration.I’m off to try the Senseo and hope that it is a little better crafted.

my first and only pod machinei did most of my research of these pod machines AFTER i received one as a gift for my birthday. man, was i scared – i had received the one (the home cafe) with the worst reviews! being that i quit smoking a few months back, coffee/caffeine has been my only vice now and that cup, first thing in the morning, has replaced my morning cig. so, i was very excited to receive this machine! before i had this machine i was using the folgers singles (surprisingly, these make a pretty good cup of coffee) since brewing an entire pot was something i had never mastered. my other options were drinking the (free) company coffee, which was maxwell house (blech!) or buying it every morning. no thanks! i didn’t want to spend $30 a month in coffee.i am a middle-of-the-road coffee drinker, meaning, i am not a coffee snob, by any sense of the word, but i DO have a preference when it comes to coffee. i love coffee-house coffee, and even coffee from hy-vee, a grocery store here in town. i had a starbucks coffee a few years ago and found it to be the most bitter crap i have ever tasted in my life. i would like to think i know good coffee when i taste it.however, i was never good at making my own coffee at home. i didn’t really drink that much coffee, but, i do like to have one good cup a day. i figured one of these pod machines would be the answer to my coffee problems. they looked simple, easy to clean up, and produced just one cup of coffee, with no waste. sure, the cost was more than brewing a pot with ground coffee bought from a store, but to me, this would be worth it.i ripped open the box with much excitement on the night of my birthday and made my first cup. i later read in the instructions that you’re supposed to “prep” it first. oops. i found the first cup to be not-that-hot and a little bitter (less so with cream and sugar). it should also be noted here that i don’t drink black coffee; i always use a lot of cream and a little sugar. but, the cup of coffee my mom and i shared was pretty good. again, i should have read the directions, as it noted you were supposed to use 2 pods for the 14 oz. setting.i’ve only had this machine a few days now, but here’s my thoughts:the good:* it’s speedy! it DOES deliver a cup of coffee in about a minute. pretty cool.* cleanup is easy – there really isn’t any!* comes with a nice, insulated travel mug that fits perfectly under the spout. i don’t know that all machines came with this, however.* easy to use, though you’ll probably want to experiment what works for you. 2 pods on the 7 oz. setting? 1 on the 14 oz?the bad:* coffee could definitely be hotter. i have read the coffee that comes out of this machine is about 140 F. that sounds hot, right? really, it’s not. on the plus side, you can drink the coffee right away, but yes, it does get cold fast, as does most coffee you get. i have been nuking mine, which really detracts from the appeal of this machine. someone has suggested using room temperature water, but again, what a pain. i’ve read both the senseo and the melitta make hotter coffee, but that depends on who you ask.the, “eh, it could go either way”:* not too many flavors available in the store. i *think* you can use the senseo pods with this machine, but i haven’t tried it out yet. buying online seems to be the best way of getting a variety of flavors. i’ve also seen a few websites out there about making your own pods. again, to me, this seems to defeat the purpose of this machine, which is coffee, quickly.* there are a few drips that come out of the machine after it’s done brewing. i think all the machines do this. get a paper towel, fold it, place on metal grate. get over it.* yes, the machine does make some noise, but nothing that bothered me. it doesn’t startle my birds, so in my book, it’s not a problem!* the cost of the pods. so far, each pod i’ve bought has ranged from .16 cents (bought at store with $1.00 coupon) to .44 cents (bought online + shipping). still, cheaper than buying it at a grocery store or coffee house by the cup.* the taste. this topic is open for discussion and varies wildly, depending on MANY factors, such as how strong you like your coffee, how bitter you like your coffee, what brands you like, etc. so far, i have tried the folgers regular, the folgers french vanilla, and the millstone columbian supremo. the milstone was WAY too dark/strong for me, but all the rest of them have tasted kind of bitter and metallic to me. i don’t know why that is. the pods smell fine, the water (filtered) is fine, but the coffee that comes out tastes a little strange to me. however, it’s drinkable, just has a weird after(and before) taste. now, some people like their coffee this way (starbucks), so who knows. i find the coffee loses some of this metallic/bitter taste when you add cream and sugar. after running just straight water through the machine (for prepping), the water had a funny taste to it as well. looks like it’s the machine, not the pods themselves that give it this taste.well, i think that about sums it up. i do want to try out the senseo, however. so, for the time being, i am keeping this machine and going to try hard to like it! well, i do like it, with a few minor exceptions. 🙂

Three times not a charmI purchased the Home Cafe at our local Walmart. It made really good coffee for nine cups. While brewing the tenth cup, it stopped mid-brew, spit at me, and then emmited a fatal gasp of acrid black smoke. The kitchen smelled of burning bakelite for the next several hours. I calmly packed up the unit and returned it to my friendly Wallyworld. I opted to replace the unit, rather than get my money back as my wife and I really liked the coffee. Grabbing another pack of coffee pods (optimistic me) we transported our new machine home. Again, following the directions by properly initiating the machine with a coffee-pod free whiz, we brewed another couple cups of delicious coffee. All went well. Then, on cup twelve a few days later (easy to keep track with the amount of pods left), again, mid-cup, another fatal gasp and spray of coffee, and silence as smoke curled up from the unit. Again, the rancid odor along with the bleak knowledge that no more delicious coffee would spew forth from this obviously poorly built unit. Head down with sadness and dejection I decided this time to call the 800 number provided in the instruction manual. After 30 minutes on hold I was finally connected to a friendly customer service rep who offered her condolences on the demise of my coffee maker. She took down the information on the deceased pot and said she was going to transfer me to another department where they would formally de-brief me in an attempt to correct the problem. 15 minutes later she came back on the phone and explained that all the “engineers” were busy, but someone would contact me within 24 hours. Three days later I received a phone call stating that no one at Black and Decker had heard of this problem Yeah, right. They were going to send me a brand new one at no expense. They only requested that I return the old one to them, and they would pay the shipping. Eagerly agreeing to these terms, we waited with great anticipation for the Big Brown Truck to pull up to our door. Approximately two weeks later it arrived on our doorstep!! Rushing to the kitchen, the appliance was carefully removed from its box. This time, it was different. What is this? The first two units were black. This one is white!!! Virginal White! Certainly a good sign. Again, the machine was ititiated with its plain water ritual, and then, with great anticipation and celebration, a Columbian Pod, yes, Columbian, was placed in the machine. Shortly thereafter another delicious cup of coffee was enjoyed. Never mind the gentle splatter of coffee on the counter. A mere minor annoyance given the rewards of the brew. As a matter of fact, eight, count them, eight more cups of delicious coffee were enjoyed with minimal splatter. Then, cup number ten was not meant to be. A sputter mid-cup. Arcing sounds from the front of the unit. Thin plumes of black smoke spiraling towards the ceiling. Gag reflex kicking in from the rancid odor. A tear forming in the corner of my eye knowing it was never meant to be. (Actually, the tear was from the smoke). I notified the woman at the other end of the toll-free number. I told her about all three coffee makers. No, I did not want another unit. It is just too much trouble to make ten cups of coffee, call in about the defective unit, wait for a replacement, make ten cups of coffee, call, wait, repeat——–. I guess I’ll try the Senseo. Maybe it will work.

Ok knock-off of the SenseoI bought a Senseo about a month ago and I was so impressed that I considered buying another one for the office. However, I got a $10 off coupon in the mail for this unit, plus it was cheaper to start with. So I figured, “What the heck”.I like the fact that you can use a taller cup with this unit and it is better geared towards the US palate than the Senseo (the Senseo defaults to a much smaller water-to-coffee ratio and you end up with something between coffee and espresso unless you brew a double cup.)I also like the water resevoir on the B&D better than the Senseo. Though I suspect that the double resevoir that Senseo offers would win out over the B&D.The Home Cafe isn’t as nicely engineered as the Senseo and it does leak when it’s brewing. It seems to be a function of how you place the pod and close it up, but you shouldn’t have to be that picky about placement. It also tends to splash as a result of the height and the way that the water comes out. If you use a taller mug, it’s not much of an issue. But if you use a standard coffee cup, you’ll need a cloth nearby for the tiny drips and splashes. It’s not like it pours gallons of coffee all over the counter, but it is a nuisance factor. If I didn’t have a choice, I’d buy the Home Cafe and be pretty happy about it. However, having a Senseo at home, I find it difficult to tolerate the little idiosyncrasies of the Home Cafe at work.I’d personally recommend spending the extra money for the Senseo. The Keurig is also a good option, but it’s significantly more expensive for the machine and for the k-cups. It does produce an exceptional cup of coffee, though. Now if only all of these guys would get together and use ESE pods instead of these proprietary things we could get all the variety we want and pick the machine that worked best for us.
