love the size of this setAfter using the pepper mill and salt shaker set for a year, I am very happy with them. They are small in size which is a positive feature for us as we keep them on the counter for everyday use. I refill them every three weeks or so. The pepper mill is easily adjustable for coarse of very fine pepper which is a great feature. Also, the salt shaker has larger sized holes than most shakers. The only little complaint is a very small chip happened on paint/stain of the salt shaker after a few months of use, but we use them both several times a day!

Is it pepper or paint? When I first saw this salt and pepper set, I thought it perfect for my back and white kitchen. I’ve used Olde Thompson salt and pepper shakers before and was happy with the brand. When I first received the set, it was pretty. But over the several months after, the paint began chipping significantly. I ultimately threw them away as I didn’t want to get paint chips in my food. Also, the bottom of the pepper mill wouldn’t adjust correctly and I often would get roughly grinded peppercorns and whole peppercorns. I might have received a bad pair as I am currently using an Olde Thompson glass and stainless steel pepper mill that I’ve owned for years and still works beautifully. Maybe it is the wooden sets that are flawed or perhaps I just got a dud.

Manly Salt and Pepper ShakersAnd our dinner conversation went like this…..Son: I hate our salt and pepper shakers.Mom: Excuse me?Son: I hate our salt and pepper shakers.Mom: All of them?Son: All of them.Mom: You hate all our festive, seasonal salt and pepper shakers? That is pretty harsh. Even the flamingos?Son: Mom, I feel like I’m going to flatten them every time I pick them up. How do you expect me to shake this?Mom: They are a little delicate. You have to be gentle.Son: Mom, salt and pepper shakers are meant to be turned upside and shaken.Mom Gently. What about the peacocks? Those are sturdier.Son I broke the plume on one.Mom: You did? That’s awful. How did that happen?Son: I used it.Mom: You are too rough with things. Can it be glued?Son: Mom, we need useful salt and pepper shakers.Mom: I love our salt and pepper shakers. What about the seahorses?Son: (cue: rolling eyes): The salt has one hole. One hole. Why can’t we just have regular salt and pepper shakers like a normal family?Mom: So ordinary. You always loved Mr.and Mrs. Leprechaun.Son: They don’t work. The stoppers fall out when you shake them.Mom: They are so cute.Son: Mom, they are just supposed to dispense salt and pepper. They aren’t cute when they swamp your food with salt or pepper.Mom: (sigh) What do you suggest?Son: I could order some beautiful, earthy, wooden salt and pepper shakers from Amazon. Look at these (shows me picture) they would go nicely with your pottery and be a real asset to any meal you fix.Me: They aren’t cuteSon: I will be able to pick them up without worrying about a wing or a foot breaking off. They will work.Mom: Fine. But the new shakers are an early Christmas present.Son: I can order them?Me: Go ahead. When the package arrived from Amazon, my son was as excited as the day I finally admitted the toothpaste tube was empty and agreed to a new tube. My son smiles every time he picks the shakers. They work, they are durable, and they’re attractive. Not cute, but attractive.

Ordered for shape, size and salt shakerI have high-tech grinders for pepper and wanted a basic salt shaker (not grind) in black. This item was reasonably priced for my purpose and the pepper mill works okay.

The Pepper Mill is greatI was looking to buy a pepper mill with a comparable mechanism to Peugeot (if not better). I purchased this and a kyocera ceramic mill to determine which would compare with an older mill that I had to retire. The Olde Thompson pepper mill from what I gather is carbon steel based. This means it is really sturdy, can withstand excessive use but has its Achilles heel with moisture. I have carbon steel items in the kitchen (Japanese knives and cookware) and am very weary about keeping them perfectly dry after use. My biggest concern was that if the mill had excessive exposure to steam (when using the mill over pots of soups etc) over time, it may accelerate the rusting process. To date nothing has happened and I would say that I am not particularly careful in being gentle with the mill- the grinding mechanism is FAR superior to the ceramic model I had- and well, its just plain perfect.Pros:The Pepper mill grinding mechanism is one of the best, better than ceramic and higher end grinding mechanisms. The mill allows for very fine grinding as well as slightly coarse, the finer grind is superb and isnt gritty at all. So its very pleasant to use on the dinner plate itself.Cons:As this comes with a salt shaker, there is no real provision for refining large salt granules, especially if one uses exotic salts.I am not entirely sure of the overall longevity of the grinding mechanism, but with my chronic use I can forecast at least 4-5 years of life (I use approx 50-80 grams of pepper a week through this mill)

Salt holes are very large to me.I had a 25 year old set of Olde Thompsons which I loved, but the finish was starting to get gummy and I wanted to replace them. My only disappointment so far in these is that the holes on the salt shaker are fewer and much larger than the on the old shaker and the salt seems to pour out quickly rather than me having to “shake” it out. I’m just using table salt from a canister.Otherwise, these are a nice color with a smooth finish. They do look black. I hope they will last as long as my first set (which had not worn out, just could’ve used a refinish, which is normal for that age I think).

Attrative, Elegant, FunctionalThis is a very attractive set of a peppermill and salt shaker. Aesthetically they are very pleasing and when you hold them they have a very high quality feel to them.Peppermill:Most, if not all, of the pepper grinders that I have used in the past always seemed like they struggled to actually grind pepper. Regardless of how I tightened or loosened the grinding mechanism, I would always put a lot of effort into grinding for a seemingly small result of ground pepper. Until I purchased this salt and pepper grinder set I had thought that this is just the way that all pepper grinders worked. This pepper grinder is a joy to use, it grinds pepper quickly and well, with minimal effort. Usually only a couple turns of the grinder and I have all the pepper I could desire, and I usually use a good amount of pepper.Salt Shaker:There really isn’t much to be said about the salt shaker, and that is not a bad thing. It is a very nice, elegant, simple salt shaker. They only thing to keep in mind about this salt shaker is that the holes in the top aren’t really well suited for sea salt or kosher salt, however if the holes were larger to accommodate coarser grained salts, then they would be too big for standard table salt. With that in mind it isn’t really a problem, just a design choice.

Works well. I like this set a lot.I purchased this set because I love freshly ground pepper and was tired of buying disposable grinders at the grocery store. The salt shaker was not something I thought I would like, but it has come in handy (my boyfriend uses it all the time) when I am salting food at the table. The pepper grinder works really well also. It can give a little bit or a lot of pepper when you turn it to grind, and it fits nicely in my hand. Both pieces look really good together. The espresso color is basically black, and they look sleek. The only negative I have is that I find myself having to refill the pepper grinder every two or three weeks. I wanted a shorter size grinder so that it would fit in my cupboard, but I also wish that the grinder held more peppercorns. Maybe that’s a personal problem 😛 Keep in mind that I cook basically all my meals at home and use this pepper grinder with every meal.Overall, this salt and pepper set is a fantastic value and definitely an upgrade from the plastic McCormick grinders that I had been buying.
