This was obviously used and not new. The bottom of the pestle is stained red and was obviously sanded down. The inside of the mortar was also sanded down, probably to remove the staining from the previous owner. It still had the sanding dust in it.

This is a great product especially if you have a pet that needs medication in the form of a pill. And that said pet fights you every time you have to give them a one or two pills. I found the best way to combat that was to buy this mortar and pestle and crush up the pills and put in their food. It worked like a charm. This mortar and pestle is easy to use and a really nice looking product. It is a little heavy but I believe it is the marble that makes it so.

Here’s photo of this piece vrs another more traditional size. Disregarding the pedestal of the other bowl, this bowl depth is easily 1/2 of the taller and more traditional one, making this a less useful bowl for pounding garlic, ginger, and seeds. Everything will jump out of the bowl. It’s mostly only good for smashing soft things or squishing things about if breaking things up is of less importance. Of course, if you have lots of time, then it works fine by carefully using less force so as not to cause things to jump out.

Super impressed with this little guy so far! For future buyer’s reference it’s about 3.5 inches wide on the inside rim, and 4.5 inches wide on the outer rim. It’s also about an inch and a half deep.

This set is very pretty, easy to crush pills. The inner bowl isn’t smooth so dust can get caught in ridges requiring a brush out to get the full product out but for the value I can work with this. Arrived on time. Ty!

Overall, great product. Both the mortar and pestle came in one piece.
I purchased this to grind old watercolors down to re-wet and transfer them from an oversized plastic palette to a smaller, travel-sized metal one from Meeden. I was a little worried the pigments would permanently stain the marble (hello, it’s white) but it cleaned up almost completely with dish soap and a little scrubbing, which is amazing considering I ground up ALL my colors from bright reds to dark blue and even black in this thing. It’s a good size – more than enough for my art purposes, and big enough for basic kitchen use. And I beat the hell out of it crushing my rock-hard watercolors into powder, so pill crushing would be a cinch. The pestle is nice and chunky, so it’s easy to grip.
Only complaint is unevenness on the mortar’s bottom curve; tried to take a good photo. Close to the center, there is a little circular ridge that pops up, then dips back down right in the middle, a little deeper than you’d expect the center to be if ground evenly. Is this a defect? I’m sure it’ll work fine anyway, but it’s admittedly annoying. I can’t decide if I want to risk grinding it even myself or dealing with a return.

Was broken when I opened the box but I glued it back together because I needed it that day. Also says that it was delivered right to me and it wasn’t.

My cocker spaniel has a blood disease and requires meds. The pills were hard to crush in order to mix through his food, so I bought this mortar and pedestal set. While it has many uses, such as crushing herbs, it has been so helpful in crushing Allister’s meds–so easy to use, and to keep clean. If you have pills you need crushed, or food, I highly recommend this product. It looks lovely on my counter too!

I’m not particularly picky, but I was disappointed that the pestle was broken upon unboxing. Luckily I have a sturdy muddler I can use until I get a replacement. Otherwise the mortar is a fine enough item.
