My greenhouse gets real hot and cold depending upon the outside temperature, being a polypropylene tunnel in full sun all day. I bought an electronic thermometer/hygrometer for the house a while back and used that in the greenhouse last year to check conditions when frosts were predicted. However, very quickly the high overnight/Spring humidity destroyed the LCD display on that and by the season’s end, I couldn’t read any numbers. It wasn’t built for “outdoor” use. It cost quite a few bucks too! I wanted an old-fashioned “mechanical” Max/Min thermometer, but environmental concerns have made those as rare as hen’s teeth and anyway, the new ones use alcohol, not mercury, which has its own performance problems.
I saw this and thought “that’ll work!”. It will survive water dripping off the plastic if it can survive in a freezer. I was right. This little guy has worked flawlessly in the nasty conditions of a damp, cold or hot greenhouse and lets me know what temps my plants have been subjected to and how my portable fan has worked during the hot days. I haven’t checked its accuracy as I’m not that concerned about actual temps with how this is used in the greenhouse.
This Fall it will go into my chest freezer in the house. The little hinged stand can be a hook also, which is ideal for a fridge/freezer. I already have a more sophisticated Wi-Fi monitoring/alarm system for the other chest freezers in the basement, but nothing for the one in the house. This will also give me a chance to check its accuracy and update this review later in the year. You could also use this in the house or wherever you need to monitor max and min temps. It has a wide temperature-range capability and is pure simplicity to operate.
I think this is worth all the $9 it costs

I HAVE ALL FOUR IN USE. ONE ON TOP SHELF OF THE REFRIGERATOR AND ONE ON THE BOTTOM SHELF. ONE IN THE FREEZER BELOW AND ONE IN THE FREEZER IN THE GARAGE. ALL FUNCTIONING PERFECTLY. EASY TO SET UP.

I’ve matched this with another thermometer that I have and they are very close in readings. I love how it beeps when the temp gets below a certain point. I forgot all about that while I was putting groceries away and it started beeping. I felt like a food when I started looking for the source. Works great!

I had a feeling my freezer wasn’t freezing properly and this confirmed it – definitely not below zero. I’ve bought a new gasket for the freezer since it was also leaking water and a tech that came said it was because the gasket needed replacing. When I replace the gasket I will update. Temperature isn’t easy to read though, I have to wipe off the screen and go up close to read properly because it’s not a lit screen, I think a dial would be easier to read.

We had a refrigerator repair guy tell us that this one was too accurate, and we did not need to monitor our fridge raider that accurately. Would recommend

For the price it’s a good deal but the accuracy is not great. There may be a reason to sell two of these as a set. The specs are +/- 2F which means the two units could be 4 degrees apart. The actual temperature, measured with a calibrated thermometer, was close enough at room temperature but off in the fridge and freezer. The sensor is inside the sealed unit (makes it “waterproof”) which doesn’t help the accuracy.
