Just KEN, thank you –
I retract this glowing review. This product is dangerous. piece of plastic can chokeI wrote the glowing review below and gave it 5 stars. I retract and give it 0 stars or a one if the program won’t let me give it a 0. I am not retracting entirely. I am in the process of trying to contact someone about the danger of this product. The idea is great and I understand it. But the mechanics and physics which make this machine work so great are also the cause of so many complaints. Why, with so many complaints this machine is being marketed still yet, considering the inherent danger of a freeze up because of close tolerances and a small tiny chunk of plastic breaking off from the paddle, and someone unaware of it can easily choke to death on the small piece of plastic is beyond me. I have already written Jeff Bezos on this and have yet to hear back. Pray that he answers. This handy little machine exceeded my expectations in every way. I bought 3. At this price, you are ready if one “crashes”. When your ice cream is almost done, it goes in reverse, and each time it senses the natural overload from the freezing, it goes reverse, this can last for a couple of minutes, back and forth which expands the ice cream with more air for a creamier experience. This is a value, no matter how you “mix it”. Thanks Jeff for coming up with a superior product. Thanks Amazon!PS, I almost lost my head on this when I had a problem. The paddle locked up, wouldn’t turn and I had to empty the contents, clean the container and start again. I thought at first it was a defect, when it was my fault all along. When freezing the bowl (not the contents), make sure you freeze the paddle along with the bowl, assemble quickly, empty your mix into bowl immediately and begin churning. It is meant to give a tight fit, but it will be too tight if you do not freeze the paddle. The clearance is close. This is deliberated to give you the best churn. When the paddle begins to resist, the motor will reverse. This will happen several times, as it should; one way then another. It gives an even better mix. and yummy.

Gonna be vintage in a few years, like those old iPhonesYou can make really good soft serve, ice cream, frozen yogurt, gelato, sorbet, and other types of frozen desserts right at home. However, there are a few caveats:-Provided that your freezer bowl and ice cream mix have been well-chilled, the machine will churn out soft serve-style ice cream in 20-30 minutes. If you want your ice cream to be a certain consistency, sometimes you have to keep watch, break up the chunks, and stop the motor manually. Otherwise, you can busy yourself with other tasks and check back in 30 minutes, which is when the motor will usually stop. Beyond 40 minutes, however, the freezer bowl will start to lose its effectiveness, and your ice cream will not freeze further. At that point, you can either eat the soft “ice cream” immediately or transfer it to the freezer for a deep freeze. To reiterate: 40-minute countdown.-The freezer bowl is quite sensitive to changes in temperature. You have to keep the bowl in the coldest part of your freezer for at least 20 hours, and make sure everything else in the freezer is super chilled during that time. If you go shopping one day and buy a bunch of frozen packaged food, they will “melt” your freezer bowl. So guess who won’t be having ice cream that day?-This machine only makes enough ice cream for 3-4 people at a time. The hardest part is waiting 24 hours to make a new batch of ice cream. If you are serving a crowd (or even a trio of hungry kids), you are much better off with the retro rock & salt-type ice cream makers that can produce 4-6 quarts at a time.-There is a small gap between the dasher (paddle) and the wall of the bowl, so the churned-out ice cream is not 100% smooth and creamy. If you are really picky with your homemade ice cream, you probably want to spring for a top-notch, compressor-style model. But at this price point? You are not likely to get a better, smoother ice cream.

Crap itemI wish I had read reviews before I purchased. Have used twice. Clear plastic top that supports motor cracked during first use (after return date of course). Motor is +/- – works for a few, stops, works a bit more. Thought I was being clever getting away from the crank maker my son and I used for years. Uh – nah – going back to the real “basics”. This product is junk.

High hopes and a huge letdown. Don’t waste your time or moneyI did a lot of research and read reviews about this item before my pregnancy cravings finally had me late night ordering it one evening. I was so excited to receive the ice cream maker. When it arrived the box was in pristine shape. I immediately opened it and noticed what I thought was water spots on the inside of the bowl. Nothing was cracked or broken that I could see until I took the lid off. The inside bowl was very badly damaged and leaking. I had seen some reviews where this was the case but I realize things happen in shipping. I requested a replacement item. It came two days later. Again, box and everything else was in perfect condition. I opened the lid and notice two very small dents in the sides of the bottom of the inside bowl. I set the piece in that churns the ice cream and it didn’t seem it would cause an issue. I was still bummed that the second one was messed up as well. When I tried to put it all together I realized that the bottom of the bowl was actually bowed upwards and kept the lid from closing by about two inches. Therefore, making the product unusable. I was offered a 15% discount to keep the item even after explaining that the lid wouldn’t close and the item wouldn’t work. My other option was to return both the item and because I had already requested a replacement I would have to then reorder the item after I got the refund for the now two damaged machines I had. I obviously returned them, but I will not be reordering them. This was also the first time I have been disappointed with an Amazonbasics item and honestly their customer service as well.If you are considering purchasing I hope your ice cream maker arrives in perfect condition and you don’t have to deal with the back and forth, but also maybe mentally be prepared that it might be damaged. I also would not wait to put it together and make sure it works probably even if it actually does look ok.

Not what you thinking….So this is a mixer basically… it does not freeze or make the ice cream. Add everything , mix, the have to put into a freezer overnight to freeze. It’s a mixer!!!

Ok for a basic ice cream makerOverall nice product. I really like most of the Amazon Basics products. This one arrived with some plastic damage to the clear cover portion. I did not want to return it, functionally, it was unaffected. It seems basic enough to have a shutoff after 30 minutes built in, but there is no such timer. Simple on/off push button. Will notake hard ice cream. Keeping in mind the price, it isn’t a bad deal. It is a very basic ice cream maker.Flavor depends on your recipe. Just keep in mind it will be a softer ice cream, not the hard stuff. We had a small sleepover, and the kids ate all of it in one sitting, no complaints from them. It seems more fragile than what I would want. Not having to use ice and salt is nice. Having to wait overnight to refreeze the sleeve portion limits use. Just a trade off between convenience & frequent use.

Nice little machine!I was skeptical, but at half the cost of others, I thought I’d give it a go.This is my first ice cream maker that doesn’t require the use of rock salt, so, again, some skepticism, but after the initial 24 hour wait for the bowl to freeze and a few hours for the base to get cold, it took only 20 minutes for it to churn to a not-so-soft serve consistency (it was a lot firmer than I anticipated!). Scooped it into the Sumo ice cream container I bought along with it and popped it into the freezer for a few hours. The verdict…as for the TEXTURE, it was perfect, but I didn’t care for the FLAVOR of the chocolate recipe in the instruction booklet (too “cocoa-ish” for my taste), but that’s the RECIPE I used and is not the fault of the machine, which performed perfectly.I agree with another reviewer that suggested for assemble, turn on, and THEN pour your base into the bowl through the opening in the lid…it DOES begin to freeze almost instantly.Furthermore, I suggest the machine be placed on a cooling rack so it’s not setting directly on the counter (air flow underneath)…I did this and the bowl still seemed to be still frozen solid after the 20 minutes it took to churn. All in all, I’m happy so far…time will tell about the quality/longevity of the machine itself.

Find something elseThis was my first purchase of an ice cream maker. The instructions were easy enough, it’s not hard to make ice cream base, chill it, and make sure the freeze bowl is frozen. The disappointing part is that the instructions clearly state the machine needs to run for 20-30 minutes and this thing couldn’t make it 12. It was pretty loud, so when it stopped before the timer I set, it was noticeable. It wouldn’t turn back on and motor was warm, so I figured it overheated and gave it some time to cool back down. Put the freeze bowl back with mix in it back in the freezer during this few minutes. Once I was able to get it to work again, I tried again and once more, it only lasted about 12 minutes. Repeated cool down process and ran it for a few more minutes to finish off my ice cream. My flavors were good since I used my own recipe, but it was sad that so much effort had to go into the actual churning process. It’s boxed up, ready to go back to Amazon and the ice cream maker I decided to purchase instead is going to arrive in a few days.
