A big step up from even the previous modelI have owned the previous top-of-line grill model – the FG551 – for over a year, and that device transformed how I cook more than any other piece of kitchen equipment I’ve ever come across. It’s just so easy to get perfectly consistent results when cooking meats, and when you’re done, you can just toss the grate, pan, and screen straight into the dishwasher. It’s not a charcoal/hardwood grill but you can get plenty of flavor with rubs and marinades.I stumbled upon this new model on Amazon while looking for a replacement lower pan for my FG551, as I’d used and washed the one that came with it almost every day for a year and it was starting to crack at the corners (still usable though). The big difference is that this new one does not rely solely on heat generated by the air fryer element at the top – the grill grate itself has an integral heating element, and when you install it onto the base, it makes electrical connections with two contacts that supply the current during cooking. I bought one immediately, and it has not disappointed!Compared to the previous model, unsurprisingly, this one cooks faster, which solves a major problem when cooking thicker cuts of meat. Previously, if I were cooking really thick steaks, I wanted to use higher temps to get better browning but couldn’t do so because heating by air alone is just too slow. The grill grate is a fairly massive piece of cast iron, and the preheat does get it up to temperature so you can get grill marks/sear, but it can’t retain that heat very long because again, air isn’t an efficient medium to transfer heat from the air fryer heating element into the grate to keep it hot. So if I ran it on high (500F) like the manual recommends, I would get a crunchy, charred shell around a rare steak; the solution was to reduce temps as far as low (400F), depending on the steak, but the results were never as good as with thinner cuts. This new unit does not suffer that problem because the grate itself is heated from below, and I can now cook everything at higher temps across the board because they cook so much faster, even for really thick cuts or when using marinades that would have burned on the old model.Clean up is similar to the previous model, but you have one less piece to throw in the dishwasher – the heated grill grate replaces a roasting pan and a separate grate that sits inside it. The only issue I have with this new design is that the aluminum grate is not coated in any way on the bottom, leaving an exposed aluminum surface; anyone who has ever put a raw aluminum pan in the dishwasher knows that it will come out with a grey/black oxide layer on the surface, which is not toxic or harmful in any way, but is annoying because it gets on everything it touches. I just hold the grate by the edges, avoiding the bottom surface, and only ever handle it to transfer between the grill and the dishwasher that resides directly below it. Once installed in the base, that surface is not exposed in any way so nothing will come in contact with it. Honestly, small price to pay for how well this device works.Very happy with this new model, and I have retired the old one, which served me well. These are the class of the field when it comes to an indoor grill, and they are great air fryers too. I don’t really use griddles so I can’t comment on that part, but it is a pretty slick feature on top of everything else this thing can do.

Takes up counter space, but I do use it too often to put awayI’m coming from an Air fryer XL, which even for the 2 of us, was too small. The air fryer for the Ninja Foodie, is much larger and easier to use. It sits right on top of the grill plate, so drainage falls onto it.One big thing, I no longer spray the pan but my food. It saves on the pans. Plus, I only hand wash the equipment. Soak the grill pan a little bit and it all cleans up easily. They say it will grill 6 burgers, but I like mine to fit the bun/bread.I like the thermometer to tell me when the food is ready. It just might not be as hot in the middle as I would like. I’m still learning on settings. Ex the cookbook and the instruction booklet will sometimes say to cook burgers on two different settings (Med or Hi) then the back of the cookbook gives more instructions. My suggestion is to work for your perfect medium and write down in the note area in back.It will cook a personal pan pizza, but only 1 at a time. I’ve found to cook for a few minutes with lid closed to brown the top then open to cook the rest and not burn the top.I have tried to bake, but only once as top really hard (I used a glass dish – and that worked well in there). It takes about 7-10 minutes to preheat, so good time to get the things ready. The beeper is loud, you can hear it (annoyingly so)!The Ninja is HUGE and heavy. I keep it on my stove as I do use it often, plus the fan is right there as I have set the smoke detector off. Just make sure you have space to put it elsewhere, when stove in use.The grill plate pops in and out easily. Again, I only hand wash. Big thing is to remember to put the top screen back in too. Wash it out after each use.My main reason to buy this was for the grilling and for that, I’m well pleased as well as the air fryer. I really want to try the dehydrator but sure, I’ll need to do that in my garage for the noise alone. It is loud (thou I’ve read the old ones were noisier). Over all I’m happy with this one. Big thing is what do you need it for… what functions are you looking for?

Not as good as previous model but still goodI have the Ninja 6 in 1 XL and thought I’d upgrade since I love the 6 in 1 XL. Naturally, I thought this would be even better… Not for me… The grill grate snaps in so it doesn’t appear you can submerge in water to clean it. The heating element vent is smaller so the air fryer cooking was a bit uneven for me. It’s the function I use the most so that was a big negative for me. It seemed the food on the sides of the air fryer cooked faster. The air fryer basket doesn’t have a flat bottom like the previous version. I didn’t like it as much. I’m sticking with my Ninja 6 in 1 XL! I didn’t even get to test the griddle, but I probably wasn’t going to use that function much anyway.

Tilted GrillIt could use a pair of adjustable leveling legs in the front to keep food from sliding or rolling off.

Not for steaksNot a good way to cook a steak, it’s nothing like a stove top or grilled steak. I used the thermometer probe and cooked a ribeye to rare. It does indeed come out rare in the center, but it’s not a warm center that u would get from other methods and the steak has a 1.5cm overcooked ring around the entire circumference, like a poorly cooked prime rib. The steak has a microwave/steamed consistency to it, probably from closing the lid of the ninja…. Which defeats the whole purpose. I’m a carnivore and I got this thing to minimize the smoke and splatter in the kitchen from cooking on a range, but if I can’t close the lid without getting rubbery microwaved steak consistency, then it’s pointless. Back to cast iron.

Excellent indoor grillI love my new grill. I have baked, grilled, BBQ and used the Air Fry functions and all work very well. There is little if any smoke and the barbecue is easy to clean. The screen really should be cleaned after each use, but it is quick and easy to do. The only negative point is the cleaning of the interior of the cover, as it is a small space.

Amazing!I love everything about it except that you can’t make the whole meal at once usually. But I wanted it to quickly make dinner meats from frozen and it made the most delicious moist tuna steaks in 13 min from frozen and then the clean up was super quick.

Works as advertised.Heats and cooks fast. Cleanup is quick and easy. I love that it catches any and all excess grease from the foods cooked. I o ly have a couple of negatives, when air crisping frozen fries, they don’t crisp up in the suggested time in the manual and if you put them on for a longer time they tend to get a little burnt. The other slight negative is that the food will often slide forward because of how nonstick the surface is and the slight tilt so it can runoff and catch the grease. Other than those two minor complaints, I absolutely love cooking with this appliance.

Makes a great char-grilled-tasting steak without any smoke. Must follow directions.I have to admit I was shocked that the steaks we made on this Ninja IG651 Foodi Smart XL Pro 7-in-1 Indoor Grill/Griddle Combo were so good tasting. If I didn’t know better I would have thought they were made on the gas grill outside! I am so looking forward to trying many other foods and techniques on this Ninja Foodi. We had a bit of a learning curve using just the booklet so we watched a few YouTube videos and seem to have a handle on it for the most part. I purchased it mostly for an alternative to outdoor gas grilling while standing in the rain or freezing CT winter weather but if it works out as good as it is advertised we expect to use it all year round as a matter of convenience. Best Wishes!
