Button programming is more complicated than it should have been, takes longer to cook on some things, but otherwise ok.I took my chance on this microwave despite the negative reviews on here because I noticed most of the negative reviews regarding arcing and such were on a different model (409), while this page is actually for ZR459YW. I was hoping in this newer model maybe all the bugs were fixed 🙂 So I’ve owned it less than 24 hours. I made a mug of hot chocolate last night using the sensor beverage button- came out the perfect temperature. I was a happy camper! Aesthetically the microwave looks nice. Huge inside. And the buttons looked simple. That was the #1 reason I picked this microwave- there weren’t 50 buttons glaring at me. I like simple things and I need simple things because I have a son with autism who I am trying to teach basic everyday living skills, like using the microwave. My last microwave was a GE with .7 cu.ft. and 700 watts that lasted 8 years till the door release button quit working. I was excited to get this upgrade in size and power. Despite having more power, this does take longer to cook for some reason. I really liked it when I set it on my counter and looked at it. I really liked it when I easily hit the beverage button and my hot chocolate came out the perfect temperature. And then this morning happened. I put a frozen breakfast “corndog” (pancake and sausage on a stick) in the microwave and tried to set it for 55 seconds as I have always done on my GE. Well, that’s impossible to do. If you hit the 5, it’s one of the Express buttons that are supposed to somehow simplify cooking… but it doesn’t. I tried to hit the 5 button twice, but it won’t let you. I tried to hit 5-0 buttons, but it won’t let you. Nope, it automatically puts 5:00 minutes on the machine (numbers 1-6 are all express buttons). So how do I do 55 seconds? You can’t. So I went the alternative route and pushed the Start button twice which each time you press it adds 30 seconds to your time. So Start button twice = 60 seconds. I hoped that would work and that the extra 5 seconds wouldn’t make it too hot for my son. It did work, except despite a longer time, the food came out still cold in areas. Alternatively you can also press the 1 and start to get 1:00, but no you can’t put a precise time like 55 seconds. ugh. When I realized this, I also realized I was going to have to pull out the manual to figure out how else they could have messed up a key pad that looks simple by making it un-intuitive. After reading the manual, I discovered nothing is as simple as it could have been. Nothing is intuitive. It’s frustrating to me. I wanted a simple microwave with simple buttons, but you have to know that each button is actually programmed in really complicated ways. The sensor cook buttons: These are supposed to sense the humidity of your item according to the book and know when to shut off, but let me tell you they are just timed buttons. If you want to cook 1 potato, hit the potato button once. If cooking 2, hit it twice. The time adjusts accordingly and hit start. Those button seem pretty easy. Until you get to the only button I ever usually use of this nature- the Popcorn button. Touch “Popcorn” 1x for 1.75oz bag, 2x 3.0oz bag, 3x for 3.5oz bag then start. What a pain in order to use the most common sizes of popcorn!Time Defrost is logical- push “time defrost” then tell it the amount of time, then start. Power level button: Instead of pushing power and telling it what percentage of power you want using number keys, you have to toggle through all the power levels. For example, pushing “power” 1x = 100% power, 2x=90%, 3x=80%…10x= 10%. That could have been simpler like “power-8” to equal 80%, but they made it into a toggle button that you might have to push 11 times or more in a row to adjust. The “auto defrost” by weight buttons are also toggle style. On my GE microwave, I would push “auto-defrost” then numbers for the weight “4-3” for 4 pounds 3 oz of meat and then it would set the time accordingly. Logical. On this Sharp microwave- I pick the “Poultry button” and then I have to toggle it several times to get to a preset weight of either “1.5lb, 2.0lb, 2.5lb, 3.0lb” or Meat can toggle through “1.0lb,1.5lb, 2.0lb,2.5lb” or Fish “.5lb,1.0lb,1.5lb,2.0lb” ….. good luck thawing .5lb of meat, or 3lbs of fish… there’s not a way to set those. So push the button for type of meat multiple times till you get the setting closest to your actual weight (forget a precise weight, not possible), then hit start. I haven’t tried this yet, but I anticipate like our “corndog” that it won’t be fully thawed when the time is done. The soften button excites me, to soften butter or icecream seems easy. The toggle button is clearly marked for this one- if you press Soften 1x for 1/2 cup of butter, or 2x for 8oz of chocolate, or 3x for 1/2 gallon of ice cream, or 4x for 8oz of cream cheese it should soften but not melt your items. I can’t wait to try this one out. I hope I can remember the weights it is specified for (would have been helpful to print that on the microwave) and hope it actually works as planned. I’ll update this review later once I’ve used it more, but these are my initial findings. The number pad… What could go wrong when you want to do something simple and logical like 55 seconds? Everything! 1-6 are locked into being express cook buttons. You try to hit the 5 for “50 seconds” and you’ve instantly got 5:00 minutes and not possible to add the 5 seconds in. You can do 75 seconds, because 7 is not an express button, but don’t try to do 55 or 65 or 45, 35, 25, or 15… won’t work. 1-6 are only usable as whole minutes unless preceded by a 7, 8 or 9. If I had realized this, I would not have gotten this microwave. It doesn’t simplify things, it makes them illogical and unintuitive. So count on not using any seconds or precise time on this microwave, ever. You can only cook rounded to the nearest whole minute, and despite it being 1000 watts, plan on cooking longer than you’re used to.The start button can be pushed multiple times to add 30 seconds to anything however, or to be used by itself for a quick 30 second hit (or 60 if you toggle 2x etc). Stop/clear button is straight forward. The other settings like multiple stage cooking I will likely never use so I can’t comment on those, but I am very disappointed in how intuitive such a simple button pad looks vs how they programmed it to be so much more complicated. I’ll be lucky if I master this let alone teach my autistic son to use it. Very frustrated with how complicated they made something that should have been so simple. In the future, I hope Sharp takes lessons from GE. Make it simple. “Defrost-3-4-start” to defrost 3.4 pounds of food would have been better than toggling through a list of imprecise presets. Same with the other toggles. And get rid of the express cook buttons- make them normal! I want to be able to just set a simple time without complication. I’d rather hit “5-5-start” for 55 seconds than hitting ‘1-start” for 60 seconds. Hard to teach math like that to a kid… 5=5:00, 1=60 seconds, etc… Just let us use them like normal. I prefer it that way. Toggling the sensor cook buttons like 1x for 1 potato, 2x for 2 potatoes makes sense, but the popcorn button got complicated by having to remember weights. If I need to set a weight on something, don’t do it as a toggle, let me push the number pad buttons to set the weight instead! Frustrated with your programming. I could have lived with the fact that the 1000 watts is less powerful than my old 700 watts, I would get used to adjusting the time accordingly, but this programming is for the birds. Please improve on that. I will update this after I’ve used it longer to comment on durability/longevity.edit: owned it a few more days. The more I use it, the less I like it. Hubby has grown to hate it too. #1 reason we hate it: Can not push the number buttons for simple timed control!!! Want 1:15 seconds? Forget it. Want 55 seconds? Forget it. Want 75 seconds since you can’t push 1:15? Forget it. The number pad is completely useless!!! And the popcorn button… well my popcorn bags aren’t labelled with ounces so no idea how many times to press the popcorn button. Considering returning this. Buttons are dumb dumb dumb. So much for what I thought was a simple key pad! I’m docking it another star. It’s not functional with buttons like this!Update: now the lights keep alternating between bright and dim with ever so slight flickering and change in humming on defrost… Am now afraid of this thing. I am adding a video to show you how it is dimming and brightening. I will be seeking a refund I think. 12/14/15Update: 1/5/16 I’ve now owned this almost 2 months. Thanks to a couple commenters on here, I was able to figure out how to do a timed cook. “Power 1-1-5 Start” will yield 1:15 seconds of precise timing! This has helped a lot with my most basic frustration and made me decide to give it a little more chance. I did read the manual but did not see the instructions for that for some reason. While I find that less than intuitive and more frustrating than my GE microwave ever was, at least it is now possible to use it by time. I have now also had time to explore some of the other functions. Sensor heat doesn’t do too bad on a dinner plate of food. Popcorn button though… just forget. Better off setting a time and standing there to listen for pops to slow down. I can’t find popcorn bags that have the exact volume that the preset settings offer, and so you either scorch it or deal with half a bag unpopped. Still hunting for a brand that will work better but I miss my GE popcorn button that was perfect nearly every time. The remaining frustrations are still annoying to me but I am bumping this up to 3 stars for finding a way to set a precise time. No chance I will ever give it more stars than that and and it still scares me that on defrost the lighting fades in and out and noises alter…. ultimately would I recommend this to others or buy another? Probably not. It’s ok… It is heating my foods with more effort required to do so than other brands imo. If this is your only option, it’s an ok choice. When this dies, I’ll likely look for something else though.

It does the job.I like the size and carousel featured. It is louder than any microwave I’ve ever had. The menu is harder to read than any prior machine I’ve had, all bunched up. But it works fine so far. I can tell the difference between this 1000 watt and my previous 1100 watt.

Sharp 1000watt microwaveI had to get a different brand in the past because it was so hard to get the popular Sharp. My last sharp got ruined because my niece by mistake put in a frozen dinner in foil by mistake. The even heating and operation are the best no cold spots when heating up soup or dinners. The instruction book on setting controls are easy to follow well written. 1000 watts very efficient and easy on the electric bill . Thank -you Sharp

CLEAN, NICE LOOKING, EASY TO USEI choose this one due to counter space limitations. I like white. The only draw back is …. you cannot time something like 2 minutes and 45 seconds – you have choices of only WHOLE minutes or just 30 seconds. I like to put somethings on perfect heat cook .. for instance 333 which would be 3 minutes and 33 seconds. So to achieve this I push “3” and it starts automatically and then I have to hit stop and hit 30 seconds. It does NOT have a handle so you push the pop button which forces door open. Its not fancy swanky but good enough and big enough. I do recommend it.

Works wellBought this to replace our 20-year-old Sharp microwave. It was still working well, but we broke the glass plate, and the cost to replace it was almost as much as a new microwave. My first thought was that it looked small, but the interior dimensions were the same as the old one, so that’s great! We’ve had it for about 6 weeks now, and it works well for how we use it – mainly for cooking fresh or frozen veggies or reheating plates of food. I really like the auto-sensor feature of the Sharp! There are a few things that I don’t care for:1. We used to make popcorn in a paper lunch sack, which you can’t do anymore. I searched several brands, and the manuals all tell you not to do this. I found out why – the popcorn now burns in the bag, and could start a fire. We ended up getting one of those glass corn poppers for the microwave, and it’s ok, but I really miss doing it in the bag – nothing to wash.2. As the carousel turns, it makes a rattling noise. I have re-seated it several times, but the noise continues.3. The area between the layers of glass in the door steams up, making it difficult to see inside the microwave when you’re using it. This is especially frustrating when I’m making caramel sauce – you have to see when the sugar mixture just begins to turn a light amber color, and I can’t see into the microwave to check it.Everything else about this microwave is great. I hope this one lasts as long as the other one did!
