Self-Basting Lid
Toss that hand baster away. Your turkey will cook perfectly tender and moist with the Oster Self-Basting feature. A specially-designed lid does the basting for you by continually recirculating moisture, eliminating tedious, time-consuming hand-basting.

Made turkey a breeze!I purchased this roaster oven with the intent of using it on Thanksgiving. It will free up my oven for other things that day. I gave it a test run today using a 15 lb. turkey. It came out perfect in about 80-90 minutes. The skin wasn’t quite as crispy as a conventional oven, but looked (see picture) and tasted great nonetheless. Before using the roaster I gave it a wash (the removable tub & lid, not the appliance) and ran it at 450f for about an hour to burn off any factory smell/oils. Then I washed again before use.I prepared my turkey by thawing completely in fridge, patting dry, seasoned with olive oil and spices, then put it in preheated roaster at 450f for the first 30 minutes, then reduced to 325f until it was done. I used a ThermoPro TP-17 dual probe meat thermometer (from Amazon) and did not open roaster lid until I reached the desired temp (one probe in breast, one in thigh). I did not add liquid to the roaster, just one cut up onion and threw in the neck and organs that come with the turkey. I made gravy from the drippings. Hopefully this appliance is as reliable as it was easy to use.

Gobble GobbleI had a Sears roaster for over 15 years that conked out last year. I did some research and pretty much decided that these things were all pretty much the same with a few little differences that were mostly marketing-speak.For example, this one has a “defrost” setting. It’s just a low temperature setting. Ditto with the “keep warm”.I primarily got this for Thanksgiving but I wanted to test it out first so I roasted a chicken. I put a temp probe into the bird and another in the roaster. The temp of the roaster stayed about plus/minus 10 degrees from the setting. I’m OK with that. The lid handle gets warm but not hot, i.e., I was able to lift it bare handed. The lid itself gets very hot which I found out the hard way. The lid does not have a window but I’m not sure why I would want one – there’s no light in the roaster so it’s pretty dark in there. It cleaned up well and I’m now ready for a big old turkey!

Moist roast turkey the easy wayThis roaster allows you to prepare moist roasted turkeys, chickens and ham and it’s easy to use. Like a large crock pot with a rack. The lid seals in the moisture and you won’t dry out the bird in your oven. It’s a bit large so you’ll have to store it away somewhere between large holiday feasts (unless you are like my mom with a budget and five mouths to feed, so she would cook turkey any old time it went on sale, and use it for leftovers, pot pies, sandwiches and of course Sunday dinner. Pea soup out of the carcass. Nothing wasted.)A long-gone friend of ours recommended this kind of roaster for turkey. While another method (separating out the meat and “spatchcocking” the breast will cook very quickly in the oven and give good even cooking, still, this roaster gives the most moist type of turkey. I recommend a probe thermometer. Some turkeys can be bony (ours this year was surely a tom, had huge bones and was done way before we planned) — those can cook unreasonably quickly and surprise you with a very over-done bird. The probe will alert you when the bird has reached the proper temperature and then you can turn off the roaster and rest it for a half hour before carving. Another plus of this method is you get plenty of great broth at the bottom because it doesn’t evaporate off. Gravy is a matter of straining, defatting if you want, and thickening. I use potato flour but a roux or beurre manie or cornstarch works as well.If cleanup is annoying (this has a coating for simple washing out) you can always line the roaster with those special bags. Some typical questions: will you get a mahogany-brown, crisp skin on the bird? No. You will see some browning on top and sides, but this is a moist roaster and the constant dry heat needed to glaze and crisp skin won’t happen. This doesn’t bother me–I want moist turkey and I always carve in the kitchen before serving; the showing carving at a table takes a lot of skill and is messy, if you ask me. Easier to remove the breast meat, the legs and wings and then cut across the grain and lay out the turkey on a heated platter and serve people what cuts they wish. And after dinner, the turkey is ready to be portioned out for the gift of leftovers to take home–or to pack away for turkey pot pie, turkey sandwiches and soups. Something you don’t want to be doing after a big feast. But if you want a big showy roast of an entire bird on the table, this is not for you.

For now, it’s good.I read many reviews, and would like to start by saying there certainly is a lot of confusion concerning these roasters. We bought this Oster 22 qt. because it cooks a larger quantity of food as compared to other 22 qt. roasters. I don’t know if it’s true, but that’s what it says. We received it on time (2 days Prime shipping) and in excellent condition. I previously owned a roaster that burned two turkeys before I tossed it out, so I was reluctant to try again. My husband hunts, and kills a lot of wild pigs, so we have a ton of natural pork all the time. He wanted me to try to roast some of the pieces whole so he doesn’t have to cut them down so much. He is meticulous about cleaning these animals, so the meat is always nice. We received the roaster yesterday, and roasted two large shoulders in it today. I washed and patted the meat dry, and then used a rub all over both pieces. I followed reviewers advice, and turned it down after the first hour. The recommendation was 350, which is where I started, and turned it down to about 280. It’s a little hard to tell exactly on the dial, so I just guessed. The two shoulders were very large, and filled the pan, but not so high that it was touching the lid. I never peaked. The total cooking time was 4.5 hours, and the meat was falling off the bone. The pork is usually fairly moist, so I can only say that yes, it was moist, and very delicious. It was actually browned on top, so I think it might brown a turkey. I wanted to try it before Thanksgiving, so this was my trial run. So far, so good.I would like to give this product five stars, but I’m 61 and have sadly watched products get cheaper and cheaper, and their life spans are much shorter than in my early years in the kitchen. I expect, and want better quality, but I’m not going to get it. Sad but true. This unit is lightweight, and yes, the pan did discolor after the first use. I did not burn or overheat the unit. It is cheaply built. the lid is aluminum. Don’t believe otherwise. The inner pan is not finished on the rims, except where you grab it to pick it up. Yes, it can cut you if you are not careful. Wash carefully. The whole pan did not fit into my sink to wash it, but I was able to rest the two handles on the front and back part of the sink so that the well was completely inside the sink. I filled it with hot soapy water and soaked it, and then gently cleaned it. It is discolored. I expected that from the reviews. I can live with it. I don’t like it.One website said this unit is HEAVY. It is not. I wish it was. It is heavier than some, especially the Hamilton beach. The roaster did smell, for about 10 minutes. No big deal. One word of advice, wipe off any prints or other debris before you use it, or they might bake on the outer finish. Don’t know, just guessing since it gets hot. And not that hot either. Just hot. Don’t touch it while it doing it’s thing. Common sense.I have a marble countertop, and there was NO heat under the unit. Here’s what frustrates me. It is more expensive to build a quality machine, but it would last a long time and we would not be tossing them into the heap so soon. How much garbage can this world stand? So, that’s my complaint, but it’s a very general complaint with so many products these days. I do not expect this roaster to last through 10 years of moderate use, and I do plan to use it fairly often. If there is one out there that will, I would love to know about it. However, this roaster did a nice job for me…….today. Thanks Oster.

Easy to CleanWorks well except temp control is off by 50 degrees, so set to 300 to get 350. Easy to clean.

Absolutely fantasticI’d never used one before. So glad I got it. The turkey was perfect. Cooked faster than expected. Cooked a 16 lb turkey in 2 hours. I’ve seen others complain about the smell at first use. Please note when you buy a new appliance with a heat element, you should run it a bit before you cook with it to burn off smell or chemicals from manufacturer. Then wash it and cook with it. That initial smell does not mean it’s faulty.

Perfect TurkeyTurkeys turn out with crispy skin and tender, juicy meat. It fits up to a 26 pound bird, snugly. The parts of the bird that touch the sides of the pan will burn. With big birds, you’re going to have some dark spots, even if you tuck and tie. I’ve used the defrost option once before roasting and it worked. Leftover meat was a little drier in that case, but it was still successful. Versatile, huge and so worth it.
