My wife, being a practical person, wanted a steamer for Christmas. After many hours of searching and reading reviews, I decided on the Secura steamer. Obviously, the online reviews were the main factor for selecting this brand and model. I know I wanted stainless steel and a digital timer, so those boxes were ticked, too. The price was in my budget so all things added up to making Secura my choice for her gift.
Washing was easy and the steel felt thin, but not flimsy. In fact, it almost felt like aluminum. Like most bases with electric heating elements and digital displays, it had to be washed with care to avoid wetting anything that could be damaged by water (ironic, isn’t it, that the component that could be damaged by water is also the component that holds the water!). After its first use, the mineral deposit was evident over what I can only assume to be the hotter side of the element and had to be washed with a 50-50 blend of water and white vinegar to de-scale it. So two observations from this: 1) the element does not heat the base evenly since only one section appeared to have the mineral deposits from the intense heat; 2) the steel is not the thickness of my steel pots and pans that I can put tap water in, boil and wash clean without any mineral build up.
The steamer started fast, but the built in timers for food are a bit optimistic. We tried steaming tamales and some frozen dim sum using the “chicken” setting (14 minutes) and it was about 3 minutes too short for the dim sum and about 5 minutes too short for the tamales. The timer, in my opinion, should start AFTER the steamer reached full steam temperature and efficiency and not just when the water starts to boil. BTW, it starts to boil after 30 seconds or so. It’s amazingly quick.
Also, like other reviewers, a built in timer audible alarm to indicate the end of a cycle would make this steamer 5 stars.
As for cooking, this is GREAT! After you get the timer settings down for your various types of food, the results are amazing. We had some left over tamales that were kept in the fridge for 3 days. You just can’t microwave tamales to reheat it. They get all dried out and heat unevenly. But in the steamer! Wow, the tamales were warm and moist. Delicious! Frozen dim sum was similar. Unlike boiling or microwaving, the dim sum had a texture to it where the wonton wrapper was moist and not overly saturated like when boiled or randomly dry and overcooked when microwaved. Frozen and fresh veggies we’re crisp and not soggy and had more flavor where we used less salt to season it (always a good thing).
We’re looking for more excuses to use this thing and steam more in 2021 and eat healthier, too.

Secura claimed they did not recognize the Amazon seller as an authorized seller, and the manufacturer warranty does not cover unauthorized sellers. I then contacted the seller. The seller said return period had expired, and they could no longer issue a return/refund/replacement.

Absolutely Delicious…………..In 30 minutes, all in the steamer, my chicken breasts came out tender and juicy, and my yams and vegetables were cooked to perfection.

Right out of the box this was an impressive appliance, shiny retro-chic with seamless, smoothly molded stainless steel surfaces, clear controls, a brilliant display … everything that my last four plastic steamers were not! “Five Stars,” I felt sure.
Then when I started using it, I began to notice issues – a strangely wobbly knob on the otherwise well made glass lid, an unsettling amount of steam sometimes escaping around the edges of the metal food trays, the absence of a water level indicator or a condensation tray, the lack of any way to add water during steaming – so my enthusiasm deflated a bit. When the lid knob actually fell off during my third use, I was less surprised than I wanted to be … though fortunately the old first-aid still works, stuffing the guide hole with lengths of wooden match or toothpick and driving the self-tapping screw (essentially wood screw) back in.
Controls and displays turn out to be this steamer’s strongest attribute. They are intuitive, positive, and very easy to select. The timer display is bright and clear from almost any angle. The “delay timer” is surprisingly useful, and the “keep warm” feature works by default and performs well. The various labeled buttons bring up suggested steaming times for several food types (in the style of Instant Pot pressure cookers), and these are very easy to change with large +/- buttons.
Cleanup is another strength: all surfaces wash easily, probably because steaming uses lower temperatures than most other cooking methods. The smooth design of the steaming trays eliminates sharp angles and crevices that could be troublesome to clean. The absence of a drip tray may turn out to be an advantage: I always find those hard to empty without spilling. With the Secura, all water that isn’t vented to the air returns to the fresh water tank, from which is safely and easily emptied (the tank is easily washed, though it develops heat stains). This design seems actually to use less water than others, so in practice no water level indicator may be needed.
An excellent design feature is that all parts of the unit (base, trays, lid) have handles. These are well designed, large, stay-cool, easy to grasp. I don’t know why this should be a rarity, but it is. As to operating speed, heating begins immediately, steam is visible in the trays in about 1.5 minutes, and steam is venting at the lid (using both trays) within 5 minutes. It’s safe to assume four minutes for heat-up and the remaining time for full-on cooking (for instance, 22-24 minutes for sweet potato chunks that would boil in 18-20 minutes … once the water is actually boiling!).
Overall this is a very nice unit because of its strengths and despite its weaknesses. I enjoy the taste and texture of steamed food, and I prefer electric steamers for their automatic timing. I’ve worn out four steamers across the years, never making peace with their hard-to-wash (or chemical leaching) plastic trays or, in many cases, their hard-to-see, hard-to-set, and failure-prone controls. This Secura steamer costs more than most of its competition, but also seems to address persistent problems – making it a reasonably good buy at the price.
Before buying, I had some trouble finding the unit’s dimensions, so here they are (approximately): Height with lid: 13 ½ inches; Height with lid inverted for storage: 12 inches; Width including handles: 12 ¾ inches; Depth including control panel: 10 ½ inches; Food tray diameter: 9 ⅛ inches; Food tray depth: 3 ¼ inches. This steamer fits easily into the cabinet space I have available, actually needing slightly less room than the oval plastic unit that it replaces. Speaking of the trays, their gauge or thickness seems well chosen for lightness plus reasonable durability, remembering that they play no role in heat distribution (that’s done by steam).

Love this steamer! It’s so easy to use, turns itself off and keeps the food warm. Allows me to do my farm chores while the food is cooking. And cleanup is a breeze!

Item was ok, till one of the handles fell off, but Secura’s support was outstanding – they contacted me right away, and after doing what they requested, they processed the replacement and received the item in a very short time, best support I received in a very long time – if I could give them 6 stars, I would.
