Nice recipe boxVery sturdy, but the lid is not quite ’ square’ Visible gap when closed. Both sides hold recipe cards with no bending. Nice size. Doesn’t take up a lot of space. Will wax or varnish to seal wood, doesn’t seem finished.I would purchase again because of the nice size.

Nice wood. Poor craftsmanship.I have recently been given possession of my maternal grandmother’s recipe file. A long pull-out 3×5 card catalog, about 20″ long. Fully packed with Grandma’s recipes. While the card catalog was merely made from cardboard, it was in her kitchen from as far back as any of us can remember. It is 60 to 70 years old. And the years of use has left it tattered and coming apart here and there. Therefore I decided to retire Grandmother’s recipe file to the top shelf in order to preserve her memory. (but it’s job is not done!) Grandma had lots of recipes that I will hold in her file drawer until the day I can have them translated. Funny…..recipes with no measurements….recipes with ingredients I have never heard of. Many have a list of ingredients but no method on how to put it together. The secrets she took with her.Now on the other side of the family my paternal grandmother had a hardwood recipe box that was in her family since ….as I was told at a young age…..”the beginning of time”. We aren’t sure what it is made of, but it withstood the house fire that claimed my grandmother’s kitchen. The box is extremely charred around the edges but still functions. While both of my grandmothers’ recipe boxes bring back a lot of great memories for me, not so much for my families. Since the younger family have no memories of being in the kitchen with my grandmas the boxes have less appeal. All that said, I have been looking for a durable wooden box that is big enough to hold all of my dear family recipes. Something I can use with pride and pass down to future generations. This is actually the second box I have ordered. I ordered the first box on eBay. It came to me in damaged condition so I had to return it. Warped parts/malfunctioning lid. I only mention The eBay purchase because it was sent in an Amazon outer box/tape.Awesome wood. It is super hard. But poorly assembled. This product arrived with warped components on the hinge side. Lid did not open fully. Lid did not match the bottom. Different width at one end and did not sit flat/close tight. Lid cracked on the back corner at some point, glued (but not clamped), leaving a thick layer of dried glue in the wood. Not heirloom quality!Sent this one back and asked for a replacement. Keeping my fingers crossed!!….—————-Finally got one I am willing to keep. Not perfect, but it will do. All the parts are true and without blem. Hinges work ok. The top piece is loose and clanks around when you open and close the lid. It wobbles on the table top but I can use the big belt sander at work to flatten it out.

I tossed the dice based on a description (Excellent)This recipe box is made of a beautiful dark wood and it’s detailed with dove joints for all the corners which normally adds to structural strength. I bought this 2nd hand as it was described as (Excellent) under the condition. Damage did not happen during shipping because obviously someone knew it was damaged either before it’s return or possibly before it was shipped. At one point I could see where it had been taped but it still has a finishing nail in it where someone tried to repair it, that was not part of the design on one of the corners. I can still make it work because it’s simply not worth the hassle of a return. Caveat Emptor !

Bought Two, Both Had Same IssueI love acacia and had my eye on this box for a while. I bought the single compartment and liked it, although there is a slight gap so that it doesn’t close tightly on the right hand side. The wood itself is beautiful and the dovetail workmanship is flawless. Weighing everything and hoping I wouldn’t get another dud, I ordered a double compartment as a gift. The double compartment has the identical problem with the wonky lid. Additionally, the wood around the hinges looks like the person who made was really frustrated and took it out on the poor box. Given that it was months between my orders, I would say this company has production issues. The wood is beautiful, but it’s a game of chance as to whether or not it would be worth ordering, depending on how picky you are. I will probably keep it, but certainly won’t gift it. I use decorative wooden boxes to keep treasures safe from mischievous cats. My friend has dogs and cats and that was the intent behind this gift. I guess it’s up to you.

Poor assemblyThe lid is poorly put together and has a major gap in it. Amazon wanted me to reconsider the 1st review, so I did. I thought that USA craftsmen would have never let this pass final inspection.

Color of wood not as pictured, one solid color, dull brownThis was one solid dull brown color, not as pictured with wood color differentiation.

Too Small for Standard Recipe Index Cards! This is a lovely box….but it is BARELY large enough for 3×5 recipe cards and is NOT large enough for the index cards which are used with 3×5 cards. The index cards which come with the box are much smaller than standard and even putting the recipe cards, themselves, into the box is a VERY snug fit. It is too bad because the box is quite attractive, if only it were larger! (The images show standard index cards compared with the box and with the small index cards which come with it.)
