For 60 years I’ve been using pepper grinders—manual & electric. This Oxo Good Grips is without question the best pepper grinder I’ve ever owned. My wife loves it as well—mainly because with a simple thumb pull, the “grind” goes from a coarse grind that I like (bigger chunks of pepper) to the fine grind my wife likes (powdery pepper). We have 1 Oxo Good Grips in the kitchen & a 2nd on the dining table. We bought this 3rd for the cottage that arrived yesterday (full of pepper as the other 2 were). It works perfectly.
But, a lesson learned & one to pass on. Before you put the Oxo Good Grips on the table—check the bottom to be sure the lid holding the peppercorns in is tight. I didn’t and peppercorns spilled over the table and my fried eggs. What a mess.
But this is a handsome, extremely sturdy pepper grinder, with a convenient way to alter the grind from fine to coarse & 4 stages in between. I will be gifting all my kids one of these at Christmas.

Over the years I have tried many salt mills. The Jamie Oliver one was the best before this one. Jamie’s is not refillable so you just throw it away. This mill is easily refilled and the mill is adjustable. There is nothing to rust!

I had the salt and pepper for years in stainless steel and they still work great. The reason I got these is I want a grey set to match my kitchen I am happy I pick them up . Very nice

Doesn’t consistently output enough, so I end up shaking it and banging it to try and get the pepper corns to enter the grinding mechanism. Everything else about it is good, but I am still going to be purchasing another one of a different brand because this one is failing to consistently perform its primary function.

I had a set of salt & pepper shakers that were very attractive but the discharge was on the bottom, so tiny salt grains were always falling out of the bottom wherever I put it. Not so with this one – the grinder unit is in the top so it never “leaks” salt. Works well. Not as attractive as the glass & wood one that I had previously, but it works great.

I had the expensive, stainless steel, French made grinder. It was really a disaster; the grind adjustment didn’t really seem to work very well, and a lot of the time the grinder wouldn’t feed the pepper berries to the mechanism very well. I had the OXO salt mill, and bought the pepper mill because the salt mill worked really well.
Sometimes the more expensive stuff isn’t any better than the less expensive stuff.

This item just arrived, so I have not had a chance to use it but that’s not what this review is about.
Issue One:
No packaging whatsoever. No box, no blister pack, nothing. A label is tied to it and the top where the pepper would come out is covered with a cellophane, that’s it. No wonder so many of the negative reviews talk about arriving broken and/or with pepper scattered everywhere.
Issue Two:
The unit comes already filled with pepper. The pepper is not in a separate container or plastic bag or anything. You do not receive a clean grinder that you can choose what to put in it. In addition, some of the pepper has already been ground, exposing it to the air. I do not consider this a very sanitary way of selling a food item.
Issue Three:
Pepper is a food item. It comes pre-filled, but nowhere on the label or unit (there is no packaging) is an; expiration date, use-by date, best-by date or any other date. I have no idea how old this pepper is. It could have been sitting on an inventory shelf for years (and remember… no packaging). This pepper could be rotten for all I know.
The first thing I will do is throw out the pepper and thoroughly wash the unit !

This grinder has all the features I have been looking for. I like the clear body so can monitor the level so I don’t run out of pepper while I am cooking, also the no mess feature of flipping it 180 deg after using eliminates mess in the cabinet. The shape and grip are user friendly and easy to use and adjust and one of the most important things for me anyway is that OXO products are of good quality is one of the reasons I purchased this item like my other OXO purchases.

Amazon tells me that I should mention whether this is giftable or not. I don’t know if it’s giftable, because I bought it for myself.
I did not expect it to come with salt in it already, so that was a pleasant surprise. I had to find a different container for that salt though, because I already had some salt that I wanted to go in the grinder, and it was not the regular rocksalt that was inside.

I bought this because it was the top pepper mill reviewed by America’s Test Kitchen. It works just as well as the reviews said. It’s comfortable in my hands and easy to turn. You can adjust the size of the grind. Because it is stored upside down, it does not leave a mess of ground pepper on the counter.
