I love my sodastream!
Here’s the trick to refilling these canisters: You are refilling the canister with liquid CO2. It fills using gravity, and not because of the pressure in the canister. So, the liquid CO2 drains into the canister and the gaseous CO2 needs to have a way to rise up out of the canister. That means that the canister must be tilted up, with the valve above the bottom of the canister, so that the liquid CO2 can run into the canister and the gas in the canister can escape by rising up and into the big fill bottle. See the picture with the thumbs up. If the canister is pointing down (see pic with thumbs down), the gas in the canister cannot rise up and escape from the canister, so the canister won’t fill.
As others have mentioned, if you open the fill bottle too far, the pressure will close the valve in the canister, so you need to open the fill bottle just a tiny bit until you hear the flow start.
The canister needs to be colder than the fill bottle. If they are the same temp, there won’t be a pressure difference to open the valve in the canister. Also, as you fill the canister it will warm up, the pressures in the canister and fill bottle will equalize, and the valve will close. So, after you first fill the canister, you might need to refreeze it and fill again to get it completely full.
You can also shake the canister/fill bottle a bit (doesn’t take much) while filling to help the gas escape the canister while the liquid CO2 is rushing in.
Also, the idea of bleeding off some of the pressure to make more room in the canister doesn’t work. The pressure in the canister comes from evaporated CO2. The pressure in the canister (and fill bottle) is the same (around 800psi depending on temperature) if the bottle is full, half full, 1/4 full, etc. That’s because the pressure is created by evaporated CO2, so if there’s CO2 in the bottle it will evaporate until the pressure reaches it’s maximum. It’s like a pressure cooker: it doesn’t matter how much water you put in a pressure cooker, the pressure will be the same if the water is boiling.
Hope that helps.

I was very pleased with this system. I am a new SodaStream user, and could not be happier! I drink a LOT of sparkling water, and I love that I can now make my own instead of going to the grocery store. The best part is not having to deal with carrying all those heavy bottles of water from the store to my home, and also dealing with the recycling of the bottles, which is not good for the planet.
I made my initial purchase for 2 cannisters, and then sent my 2 empty bottles back to SodaStream via USPS. It was very easy, because you use the same box they are shipped to you in when you purchase the full bottles. Just put the empty cylinders in, seal the box, register the shipment with SodaStream and return to USPS. Even easier, I didn’t even go to USPS! I went online and set up a home pickup. That was also very easy and FREE! I kept track of my shipment via the USPS website. The empty cannisters were delivered to SodaStream on a Monday, and I had my electronic Amazon gift cards the very next day! It also makes me feel good that I am not disposing of the empty cannisters and putting them to good use by having SodaStream recycle and use them again. A very well-organized system, and kudos to SodaStream for making it happen. I am a fan for life!

so i mainly wanted to post this because i did successfully get my gift card after mailing them back out. i waited forever to redeem it but once i did i got the gift card fairly quickly. you either get the email when the the tanks get there, which probably takes forever cause its usps return mail, or you do what i do and forget to go to the website until a month later and then get the gift card email in about an hour

I was a long time user of SodaStream and then quit because it was difficult to find the charger bottles in my new location. Now, it is all mailable and so I am back to this great way to have the bubbles in my water. And while they sell flavors for the water, we like the pure bubbly essential water cold.

The product is fine and they make it easy for you to return the cylinders however; it is certainly the most economical methodology. If you have a Bed Bath and Beyond near you, it is much less money to exchange for full cylinders.

Its a more economic way to drink carbonate water and you can add different flavors to it. Also, it’s a very easy process to return the use can.
