A fine way to make one cup at a timePROS:Makes good coffeeEquivalent to drip coffee or Keurig cups in my opinionLess post consumer wasteConvenientEasy to useEasy to cleanFast and simpleCONS:Not the best method to brew bold coffee/’artisan’ coffee (but then again, for me neither is Keurig)Unlike the Keurig you will need a minimal kitchen environment (water supply/sink, trash can) to useOnly two levels possible using the cup rest which may not be convenient for all sizes of cups and mugsSimilar footprint to a drip coffee maker–this will not save you much counter space compared to an 8 to 12 cup, standard drip coffee makerOVERVIEWI don’t want to reinvent the wheel here, but there are a lot of reviews on the Hamilton Beach 49981 Single Serve Scoop Coffee Maker out there and a lot of diverse opinions on how it works. I will try to tease out the important aspects of the product to help you make your decision. In my opinion, this coffee maker is equivalent to a standard Keurig brewer but will allow you to use your own ground coffee in a simple and convenient way. You can use reusable Keurig cups and use your own ground coffee inside a standard Keurig brewer, but this is a somewhat more clunky way to brew your coffee. The refillable K-cups have to fit inside the Keurig brewer so they are more challenging to fill. There is less room inside the refillable K-cups so often the coffee will be weak. Moreover, the Scoop Coffee Maker coffee makes the whole process of using your own coffee beans easier.INSIDE THE BOXInside the box you will find the Hamilton Beach unit itself. It comes with two Scoop Brew Baskets, an instruction manual, and a quick guide. The unit is mostly plastic, but clad in a lot of stainless steel and handsomely constructed. It feels like a real kitchen appliance, not a cheap coffee maker. The base is about 6 3/4 inches wide and 7 3/4 inches deep. The unit stands 12 3/4 inches high, but you will need about 17 1/4 inches of clearance to fully open the device. Standard clearance between your kitchen counter and cabinet is about 18 inches, so this should work well in most kitchens. The coffee maker isn’t majorly huge compared to other coffee makers but this one cup at a time coffee maker is not going to save much counter space compared to a standard 8 to 12 cup, drip coffee maker. The unit has an integral drip tray that has only two positions. The lower position is good for a 7 inch travel mug. If you invert it, you can raise the platform to accommodate cups that are 4 1/4 inches or shorter. The problem, of course, are mugs or cups that are in between these heights. If there is too much of a gap between your cup and the drip spout, you will get splashing and it will make a mess. It would have been nice if Hamilton Beach could have had a platform with three or four positions instead of just two.The top of the unit can be opened to reveal the ‘shower head’ where the hot water is released on top of the grounds. The Scoop Brew basket can be inserted in and out of this space. Below this is a filter holder with a finer, secondary filter to catch any coffee grounds that escaped the Scoop Brew Basket. This fits easily into the filter well below. The system generally works well. If the coffee is ground correctly, you do not have to clean the filter holder more than once every four or five cups of coffee. Some people place filter paper (or an Aeropress filter) on the bottom of the Scoop Brew Basket in order to avoid any finer grounds from escaping.MAKING COFFEEBasically, you scoop your coffee into the Scoop Brew Basket. I suppose you could use the Scoop Brew Basket itself to scoop up the coffee, but if it is moist, this will pick up grounds on the bottom of the basket. I use a separate scoop. There are marks on the Brew Basket for an 8 ounce cup and 14 ounce cup. You can use these as guidelines, but from my point of view these are suggestions only. You open the top of the brewer, place the Scoop Brew Basket in place and shut the top. Take your coffee cup of choice, fill your cup up to the desired height (the brewer will hold up to 14 ounces of water), and then pour the water into the back of the brewer. You then place the cup on the cup rest (at either the low or high height) and press the brew button. There are two ways to brew, regular and bold. Ostensibly, the bold setting drips the coffee more slowly and is supposed to work better for more finely ground coffee or artisan type coffees. The slower drip is supposed to yield a bolder cup of coffee, but the differences in reality are quite subtle.Once done brewing, you lift the top, remove the scoop, empty the scoop in the garbage, and rinse the remaining grounds off in the sink. There’s a nice, long handle on the scoop so heat is not an issue.TASTESome reviewers complained of a plasticky taste to the coffee that wouldn’t go away. In my experience, I didn’t notice this. I did rinse the devise by putting it through two cycles before using it.The taste and strength of the coffee is similar to that of a standard, classic Keurig brew. If I really want to drink a great cup of joe, I will take the time to use a French press, do a formal gravity brew, or use an Aeropress. The slower methods soak the grounds more completely and extract more flavor from the beans. That said, even regular drip coffee with a good machine allows you to play more with the ratio of beans to coffee and is probably an overall more consistent and better brew. But the slower method require boiling water separately, take longer to brew a cup of coffee, require boiling water separately, and (with the exception of gravity brewing) you have to fiddle with more parts and clean up takes longer. Drip coffee takes more time to set up and more time to clean up.The overall taste using with the Scoop Coffee Maker depends on the type of coffee you use, the grind (the Scoop Brew Basket will accept very finely ground coffee if you want to really pack in the boldness), and the total amount of coffee used. I have used a number of Keurig machines–I own a Mr. Coffee Keurig and have used a few different models at work. Keurig coffee is easy, simple, and beats the pants off of regular office coffee or most instant coffee. But it is expensive to buy the pods and there is a real problem with getting truly high boldness in the brew. Yes, you can use refillable Keurig cups but these are less convenient to use than the Scoop Brew Basket, as they are more difficult to fill.I would rate the coffee brewed in this maker to be similar to Keurig coffee. Once I settled on a brand of coffee, worked out the fineness of the grind, and figured out how much to use, I am able to brew consistently good coffee. I am very happy with this machine after over a month of use.I still like my Mr. Coffee Keurig machine, but I’d rather save on coffee, decrease my post consumer waste, this one is easier to fill with water, and the Scoop Brew Basket is less of a mess to fill with ground coffee than the reusable Keurig cup. Additionally, there is a lot more room for coffee grounds in the Scoop Brew Basket than there is in a reusable Keurig cup, so I am able to squeeze out a slightly bolder brew.PROBLEMS/DISADVANTAGESThat said, there are some significant disadvantages with this type of brewer.First and foremost, you need a consistent water supply and a place to wash the Scoop Brew Basket. You can pretty much place a Keurig brewer with a refillable reservoir anywhere. So long as you’re reasonably close to running water or near a water cooler, you can refill the reservoir, pop in the K-cup, and get your coffee on the run. With the Scoop Single-Serve Coffee Maker you need access to a real sink. You have to dump the grounds and then rinse off the filter. Every 3-4 cups of coffee, you also should clean out the filter holder with the secondary filter. None of this takes much effort, but it does take running water. As above, this is not the best way to make truly bold coffee. The coffee quality is on par with Keurig coffee or pod systems, but isn’t as fully flavorful or bold as the slower, more labor intensive methods (e.g. gravity brew, French Press, Aeropress, etc.)As above, the cup rest only has two positions. It would be better if there were three or four positions to prevent splashing.CONCLUSIONOn the whole, I am very satisfied with this coffee maker. The major decision for most people who intend to purchase this device is whether they should opt for this or a Keurig-type machine. The taste of the coffee is similar for both machines, although I was able to get a slightly bolder brew from this device. But both machines are trumped by coffee made by slower, more labor intensive methods. The Single Scoop Coffee Maker is a very convenient way to brew coffee one cup at at time with minimal post consumer waste and it is quick and efficient enough to make it a great brew-on-the-go option. It takes minimal time to put the coffee in the scoop, pour water in the coffee maker, and hit the on button. Rinsing off the scoop (even when you rinse off the secondary filter) does not take much time at all and you can leave it until you come home on the evening if you prefer. However, Keurig machines are still just a little slicker–with the self contained K-cup there is no preparation and clean up involves throwing K-cup in the trash. Additionally, for the Keurig, you don’t need to have a sink nearby. So for an office where the machine isn’t placed near a sink you could use bottled water or water from a water cooler without installing additional plumbing. This system is nearly as quick and convenient as pod systems or K-cups, I do enjoy the decrease in post consumer waste, and I am happy with the ease with which I can use my own kind of coffee. For now, it is my go-to machine for my on-the-run, AM coffee. Recommended.

I own four…I originally bought one maybe 10 years ago, after our first $200 Keurig died. It cost $40 at a small kitchen store. It made excellent coffee and was far cheaper to operate and far more eco-friendly than Keurig/Pod based coffee makers, that exist only to generate plastic waste and dissolve plastic into your coffee, whether or not you can taste it.I had a job where I sometimes lived alone during the week, so I got a second one for the rented house I lived in as making a full pot of coffee seemed excessive. We got a second home somewhere in there, so I got a third one. One of my sons stole one, so I got a fourth one to replace it. I’ve given a couple away as gifts. I LOVE this coffee maker. To make coffee you take the STAINLESS STEEL pan (dry) and scoop up some ground coffee. With experience, you can easily eyeball the right amount for your tastes. You put the pan into the machine on top of the secondary screen, add water, put your cup underneath, and hit one of two buttons that nominally alter very slightly the brew temperature/pattern. You can vary the amount of coffee relative to the amount of water to the regular/bold button results to get at least some degree of optimization to your own tastes, but honestly, if you use good , fresh coffee to make coffee, the coffee that comes out is going to be good, hot coffee for almost any reasonable permutation in its range. To make a second cup, you take the pan, rap it sharply on the side of your garbage can to remove the grounds, rinse it, and rinse the little filter that sits under it to keep the coffee grounds-free. Put back the small filter, and either dry the pan and scoop etc or use a second pan (I generally keep two to rotate them) or refill the wet pan with a secondary scoop. Literally a minute, with no non-biodegradeable waste. You can even compost the grounds if you are eco-fanatic enough and generate NO waste. If you are a coffee essential oil fanatic, you can use a small piece of coffee filter paper in/under the pan to absorb the “bad oils” and further improve the cup it makes, but I rarely bother as I don’t use paper filters at all even in full pot machines — too much waste, too little gain. Good coffee beans make good coffee, stale ones make bad coffee, simple as that, no point in trying to make good coffee out of bad coffee grounds/beans.A simple trick makes this coffee maker even better. It has (for reasons that escape me) a big hole in back above the tank intended to keep you from overfilling it with water. This hole limits the size of the coffee cup you can make at one time pretty substantially. If you leave the hole open, you can use an Ozark stainless steel cup that holds 16 oz of coffee and has a snap-shut lid (available at Wal-Mart, usually near camping) to make a perfect thermos cup of coffee if you add water to the very edge of the spill line. If you COVER this hole — which I routinely do now — you can add enough water to fill their LARGER stainless thermos cup with a snap-shut lid and basically end up with around 22-24 oz of coffee in a single brew, ready to safely carry to your car — say, 1/3 of a 12 cup pot. Obviously, you fill the pan a bit more if you do this, but there is plenty of room to make coffee that is still plenty strong enough if you do, especially with “bold”. So you can in ONE PASS make enough coffee in a single stay-hot stainless cup to get even a fanatic/addict through the morning and well-launched on a day, or you can (of course) just make two 16 oz stainless cups. Either way, these “travel” mugs/cups are double walled and insulated and can keep coffee warm to hot for hours when snapped shut. This coffee maker does need to be cleaned/descaled periodically, and you should use soft water or clean more frequently, just like any other, but my ORIGINAL purchase is still running after years of service cleaning it with vinegar as usual a couple of times a year. You do need to rinse off the brew head (where the water comes out to hit the grounds) a lot more frequently, especially if you (over)fill the pan, but you can actually hold it upside down in the sink and run water over it to do so and at the same time hose out the water reservoir etc as need be.A second thing to note is that if you own this machine on a decadal time scale as I have, you have to either replace the pan or periodically clean off any coffee that sticks to the pan screen or the holes will close up and your brew will back up into the head or overflow onto the secondary filter. Soaking in cleaning vinegar or “the Works” toilet bowl cleaner (basically hydrochloric acid) and then washing/scrubbing rinsing will revive it for a few more years, but at some point it will probably need replacing (when the screen wears through, for example:-). Wearing a coffee maker OUT, of course, is something that never happens in the planned obsolescence world of today, but with this single cup maker, it is possible. The ones I own just might actually last the rest of my life, except for the pan, if I can keep the guts descaled. There just isn’t much else to go wrong.Could it be improved? Maybe, a tiny bit. It’s brew temperature is a hair colder than “perfectly optimum” — fresh-brewed coffee comes out at maybe 150-160F, a good drinking temperature but a bit cooler than the 180 coffee fanatics insist on as the ideal brew temperature. Still makes a damn good cup, though. They could either leave out the hole or at least, put it up where it NEEDS to be, right before the point where water overflows down into the brew head and makes a mess, not down there at least 4-5 oz short of the true maximum brew capacity. But overall, as I said, I LOVE THIS COFFEE MAKER. It has already outlived generations of 12 cup makers on the side and I’m thinking of buying another spare just in case they ever stop making it.

Simple design to deliver a single servingI bought this unit to replace a very basic $30 Mr. Coffee machine.I am the only coffee drinker in the house. I don’t need to make 5 “cups.”The basic design has been around for a number of years and is pretty idiot-proof. The scoop does not fit the rectangular container where I have traditionally kept my coffee, but it would fit a large coffee can. The first few times I measured the amounts of coffee and water carefully, but I’ve been successful just eyeballing the levels since. The unit delivers the coffee in a few short minutes. There is no warming tray, so the unit turns off after brewing. The coffee is not quite as hot as I prefer, but that’s just me.I really DON’T miss the Mr. Coffee glass carafe which I could never get to look clean. This unit dispenses right into your cup or travel mug.Sure there are lots of high-falutin’ coffeemakers loaded with features I don’t feel I need. If you’re a true coffee connaiseur you probably wouln’t even consider a unit like this. But for us regular “Joes” (pun intended) this gets the job done.

Hamilton Beach Scoop Single Serve Coffee MakerI purchased the Hamilton Beach Scoop Single Serve Coffee Maker, Fast Brewing, Stainless Steel (49981A) on December 3, 2021.I followed the instructions, cleaned the parts and the coffee maker. Now here is the part that Hamilton Beach leaves out of their instructions. (This may have also been the user’s problem that posted the video that initially poured in 8 ounces of water but she only got 4 ounces in her cup after it was brewed.) When I first poured water into the coffee maker to clean it, I initially poured in 14 ounces of water, but it did not fill to the MAX line, which is 14 ounces. The coffee maker has a 4 ounce reservoir which allows it to be basically primed with 4 ounces of water to heat up quickly. (see picture with arrow) So, I had to add 4 additional ounces of water to get it to the MAX line. I ran the coffee maker on Regular on this first run to clean it. I again filled it with 14 ounces of water and this time it went to the MAX line. This time I chose Bold on this run to clean it. I again filled it with 14 ounces of water to the Max line, and ran it again on Bold for the third run to clean it. After this, I completely emptied the coffee maker of all water, and water poured out of the 4 ounce reservoir. I also noticed that water came out of the showerhead. Keep in mind, that if you travel with this coffee maker or don’t use it for several days, this water is in this reservoir and if you don’t remove it, it could begin to get moldy or get mildew in it which you don’t want to happen. If you do travel with it and forget to empty it, and you lay it on it’s side, you will have a water spill.Overall, I like the coffee maker. Some have said they have had a plastic taste in their coffee, I have not experienced that. Some have said it did not heat up very well, I did not have that problem. I tested the water temperature with a liquid thermometer when the coffee came out into my coffee cup and it was 182 degrees. Nice hot coffee, which is what I like! Initially I used it without any paper filters and I use a fine ground coffee. I had residue from the coffee grinds in my coffee cup. I use one tablespoon of coffee per 8 ounces of water. I have tried both settings, Regular and Bold, and have experienced no issues with the coffee maker. The Bold selection does run slower and the coffee is a little bolder but not much.If you make more than one cup of coffee with it, and use the same grounds for the second cup, the second cup will be weaker in taste, however, the color of the coffee was the same. The showerhead and the filters do get hot, so be careful when you touch those when you make that second or third cup. The best cups of coffee for me is to dump out the coffee each time from the filters and start fresh. I did purchase the 1 cup paper coffee filters and that has removed the coffee residue. Put the paper coffee filter under the scoop that holds the coffee, not in the scoop. It would be nice if Hamilton Beach provided coffee filters for this coffee maker. If you use a coarse ground coffee instead of a fine ground you may not have that issue as much but I believe that no matter what grind you use, you will have coffee bean fine dust from the grinding process that will initially end up in your cup of coffee without a paper coffee filter.I gave this coffee maker four stars because Hamilton Beach doesn’t mention anything about the 4 ounce water reservoir on the initial fill of water nor do they mention that you should empty it each time of the water when you are done using it. Also, they should include paper coffee filters for those you wish to use them.I hope this review has been helpful, and please never let the water set in this and become stagnant. For if you do, you will definitely have some very nasty tasting coffee and it can’t be very healthy for you either!

LOVE this coffee maker!I received an earlier incarnation of this coffee maker about 8 years ago as a Christmas present, and I’ve used it daily since. Recently it started having issues, so I looked for it’s replacement. I’m glad I found the same model! There are some subtle differences, and this model doesn’t come with a second coffee basket, but the old baskets actually fit this model.I didn’t maintain my old coffee maker like they suggest, and it’s possible that it may have lasted longer had I cleaned it monthly. I will take better care of this one. However, for the amount of abuse I gave it, it lasted a good long time. It’s extremely easy to use, and it brews coffee super fast. If you only drink one cup per day, this coffee maker is perfect!

Great coffee maker, but cup sizes need another lookThis is a great solution for me with one caveat- the cup sizes. The smaller 8 ounce choice does not come close to filling my smallest coffee mug, while the 14 ounce choice fills my largest cups to the brim. I like to buy my own beans and I have a grinder that I like, so this is a great way to make a single cup with freshly ground beans- much quicker and easier to clean up than a french press or drip coffee, and faster. I do not use the included strainer to scoop the coffee, but instead grind one cup worth of beans at a time and pour them into the strainer. So no problem with a second cup when the strainer is wet. I really like this, but would love it if there were more realistic cup sizes or more choices in cup sizes.

ImpressiveI had been looking for a single cup coffee maker that DIDN’T use pods for a while, but none really impressed me very much. Then I came across “The Scoop” by Hamilton Beach and I pushed the button and made the purchase. The coffee maker arrived on time and in pristine condition. I had read the reviews beforehand so when I placed my order, I also purchased 1 box of #1 coffee filters (seen in the photo) along with a new 16 oz THERMOS Stainless King Vacuum-Insulated Travel Tumbler. After running 3 cycles of clean water through the system, I made my first mug of coffee following the directions exactly. I did NOT use a paper filter and to be honest, I didn’t run into an issue of sludge being in the bottom of the mug, nor did I encounter any grounds floating in my coffee. Lastly, there was NO sputtering during the brewing and NO splattered coffee escaped outside the travel mug… not a drop. That said, I was using the travel mug pictured which almost goes completely to the bottom of the filter well so there was very little room for anything to escape. All in all, the first mug wasn’t bad. It had a slight acidic taste to it but was within my boundaries of being called “decent.” After I finished the first mug of coffee, I rinsed both filters and the filter well out thoroughly and prepared to make my second mug; this time with a paper filter. As seen in the photo, I placed a #1 paper filter between the brew basket and secondary filter. The grounds were placed inside the brew basket. Almost an entire bottle of Dasani water was poured in (which was surprising since the well is only supposed to hold a maximum of 14 oz and a bottle of Dasani is 16.9 oz) and the bold brew cycle was again started. A few minutes later the second mug was ready, and it DID actually taste better than the first. The slight acidic taste I experienced with the first mug was not present in the second mug. This improved the taste from being decent to being fantastic! So, in summary, I do not believe that paper filters are necessary when using “The Scoop” coffee maker but IMO the paper filters do cut down on the oil and acidic taste turning a decent cup of coffee into an even better cup.I would easily recommend this coffee machine to friends and family who are looking for something other than a “pod machine.” The price is extremely reasonable, it’s well made, looks nice, cleans up easily, doesn’t take up a bunch of space and most importantly, it makes very good coffee. Oh… almost forgot… when brewing a cup or mug do NOT remove the cup when the coffee stops pouring into the cup. I discovered rather quickly that the coffee will stop pouring several times while filling my travel mug but would then start up again a second or two later. The mug/cup is ready to be removed once the green light goes out.

Very Pleasantly Surprised for the PriceWe love this thing. Quick tasty coffee with no pods to mess with and a snap to clean. Just works. Should say Apple on it. It has a reusable double filter system that seems to work great with good flavor and no sediment. Way less expensive than the old Keurig we had in both operation and initial investment. We don’t mind pouring a fresh cup of water in each time in order to save a bunch of counter space. The two cup shelf heights are easy to set and prevent spray while also allowing for taller insulating travel mugs.

Significant improvement over previous modelThis new model fixes all the complaints I had about the older one I had, but it does add one new one.Pros:Water tank can be removed for filling and holds more, very convenientEverything on top has a lid that seals with no gaps from above (the only place I have to keep this is underneath the basket that holds onions and garlic and their outer skins would flake off into the old one and need to be removed frequently)Has buttons to select between 8oz and 16oz brew sizes, this combined with holding more water means I don’t have to fill the water specifically to the size of what I’m brewing, nor fill it every single brewCon:The scoop is taller but narrower, so I have to grind more coffee per cup to account for how much will spill around the edges when I fill it. A funnel to make filling easier would be nice.

Lot of negative reviews… READ THIS IF YOU GRIND YOUR OWN BEANS!I got the 40oz reservoir version of the SCOOP and find it totally great. Much better than k-cup if you grind your own beans. I got this about 2 months ago and I drink 2-3 cups a day so, it has been well worn in. I buy whole beans and have a small burr grinder. I used a classic Keurig and used the refillable cartridges for several years. The Scoop is much easier to fill and clean between cups. The main scoop fits into a secondary screen filter and both are easily removed for cleaning. The reviews that people are unaware of the secondary filter are just ridiculous, it usually slides out when you lift the scoop for cleaning. The scoop has a sturdy handle that you can use to bang on the side of your kitchen trash can to remove the grounds and a simple rinse under the faucet and you are good to go with another cup. I rinse the secondary filter daily under the faucet and slide it right back into the feeder hole, very simple. I use a heaping tablespoon of coffee for an 8oz cup. I admit I have not used the 14oz, because I drink my coffee from a mug and don’t like to reheat. The Scoop coffee is a somewhat hotter than the Keurig and I like this. I used the “strong” setting a few times and it takes longer to brew 8oz cup and I really didn’t notice a taste difference. The strong setting basically slows the water drip through the grounds leaving more time for water to pick up flavor. There has never been a leak or overflow. I can imagine an overflow if you pack the scoop to the top with grounds, but the instructions clearly warn against doing so. I get good strong coffee every day with no strange tastes. There are many reviews that specify a plastic taste. I think I have very sensitive taste buds and I have never tasted anything but coffee from the Scoop. One negative… If you don’t use the second tier flip down platform for a coffee mug, you will get coffee splatter, and quite a bit. I regularly use the flip down platform and it fits most of my larger mugs, but I have to angle them in to fit under the drip nozzle. This results in no splash. I don’t use tall travel mugs, but if you do, I don’t see a splash problem if the top is within 3 inches of the drip nozzle. One more negative… The base doesn’t have any volume to catch drip and if you forget to put your cup under the nozzle when you start a brew, you will have all of it drain on your counter and floor. The Classic Keurig base will hold 8oz if you forget your cup. Another miner annoyance is that the Scoop has some residual drip after you remove your cup. I put a folded paper towel on the base to absorb the few drips rather than have to wipe the base. Overall, great coffee, easy to use, clean and fill the 40oz reservoir and it takes up less space on my counter. This is a great coffee maker, especially if you grind your own beans.
