The Fairy Godmother –
I bought this to make toffee after throwing out 3 burned batches made with a mechanical thermometer. During the third batch it read 240 and the candy was smoking, so I knew this thing was junk for sure (Ok, I’m slow). Off to Amazon to see if I could find the one I used for 14 years before it just wouldn’t wake up one day, even with new batteries. They have it! The reviews were so bad, one stating their good luck with the old one and no luck with the new one that I decided against it. Well, crap. So, here are the pros and cons of this one.
It appears to be accurate; the toffee came out great. The clip on this thing is the best I have ever had: it holds the stem parallel to the side of the pan, near the side of the pan. Most stems stick out and get knocked about; not this one. The alarms were nice to have; one 2-3 degrees before the set temperature, then at the set temp it speeds up, letting you know you are there.
Cons; you have to read it straight on. Crouching down got a bit old, thank goodness for the alarms. The head does not tilt, like my old one. This would made it MUCH easier to read.

I finally decided to replace my “paddle” style candy thermometer that hasn’t worked right from the get go. That one was difficult to read and inaccurate. It resulted in my first negative review of a product purchased on Amazon.
I decided to go digital and ordered this one from Amazon. I received it on Friday Dec. 14, 2018 and sent it back on Friday Dec 14, 2018. I tried testing it in boiling water, which boils at 210F here in Phoenix. The thermometer readings/screen turned to all “8”s and then went black before it even reached 210F. So, back it went. I decided to re-order it and, I’m glad I did because this 2nd one works as expected.
I first tested it in boiling water. Right on the money. I recommend knowing your boiling point where you live for greater accuracy.
Today, I made a batch of pecan brittle and this thermometer was a joy to use. I preset it to the desired stage, the red light flashed and beeped when I was 3 degrees below my target temperature (250F). I then finished cooking it to the final stage (300F) and again, it was nice to easily read the temperature and also respond to the alarm’s red light and beeps. I really like the alarm going off when the temperature is 3 degrees below the target temperature. There is such a range between what the temperatures for any stage when you’re making candy.
I make candy once a year, so I can only hope that this thermometer works next year. I’ll test it in boiling water before using again. I ruined multiple batches of candy with my old paddle type because it was wildly inaccurate and the devil to read those little lines. I can’t yet rate the durability of this CDN unit, but it is easy to set up and use, once you have the instructions. I printed out user instructions I found online because none came with the thermometer. It’s not easy to clean, but no candy thermometer is. You just have to be careful and mindful to avoid getting anything other than the probe wet.
What I don’t like is that I can’t manually turn this unit off. It stays on for an hour and shuts itself off if not in use. That drains the battery. Unlike other reviewers, I did not find the steam guard ring or the pan clip to be hard to install or use.

It works fine but it is very hard to read. It looks like it has an lcd on top of an lcd and they aren’t lined up perfectly nor do they seem to be working together.
Hit news difference between looking at it for half a second and taking four seconds to figuring out what the temperature is and I don’t have that time in my food truck

I use this primarily for deep frying. It seems to read 350F accurately as my food comes out crispy and not dry, and oil temp is very important for deep frying. Only thing is, if the temp keeps “hovering” around 350 and passing above and below it by a few degrees, it keeps beeping every time this happens, which can be annoying.

I’m pretty sure the actual thermometer is accurate WHEN it works. But, sometimes it would turn off in the middle of using it. That’s very frustrating when you need to get to a precise temperature and your thermometer shuts off right before you get there. It could not stay clipped onto the edge of the pot. Sometimes we would try to turn it on and it just wouldn’t. We returned it after two uses.

This is the one that I have been looking for .. for years! You can put it into the pan without having to stand holding it – and because of the heat shield it doesn’t get warped … like the last 2 candy thermometers i had! Really easy to use …. wish I had come across this model years ago!

It worked well when making toffee. However, it was not that easy to read. I have vision problems, and I ordered this because it was supposed to be easy to read. I did not find it so. The lettering was somewhat faint, and it wouldn’t stay in place. Had to keep adjusting it, and that could cause burning of my hands.

I bought this about two weeks ago for use when frying with my Dutch oven. I make Mexican food about once a week and like to make my own chips, getting the oil to the right temperature was difficult, my instant digits thermometers were slow to read and if the oil isn’t watched constantly it will get too hot and take forever to cool back down. This thermometer has solved that, it has an alarm for when it gets to the correct temp. I now make my chips quickly and they turn out perfect! 90 seconds with the temp starting at 375’, I use 10 small tortillas at a time cut into six pieces. After the batch is done I wait a few minutes and the alarm will let me know it’s time for the next batch (add fresh ground sea salt for amazing flavor).
There are a few drawbacks though- the thermometer is not backlit and the numbers are quite small making it difficult to read.
Overall I’m happy though and would recommend. If something changes I will update my review.

I don’t do reviews on reciept of items unless they’re nothing like ordered, otherwise what is the point “I ordered it, it arrived and was what I ordered”. Most importantly for me is the longevity of the item and this has failed almost 12 months from the date I recieved it. The thermometer is no longer working. I have replaced the batteries with no success. So, it worked for 12 months and worked fine, I did end. Up wantingfor an alarm as the temperature dropped to a certain point but it worked fine. Now it has stopped working and I won’t be replacing it with the same item as I don’t aspire to being someone who buys stuff to throw away and replace without any regard for the wider impact.
