BRAND NEW 2K MASTER! Hollywood icon Tom Cruise (Valkyrie) in his first starring role has everything to gain—and a certain something to lose—when he crosses paths with Shelley Long (Hello Again) in this rambunctious road-trip comedy set in the wild and wacky sixties. When all-American high-schooler Woody (Cruise) and his Sinatra-obsessed pal Dave (Jackie Earle Haley, Watchmen) decide that it’s time to lose their virginity, they enlist the help of their “more experienced” friend Spider (John Stockwell, Christine) and head south-of-the-border. Now, in a hilariously raunchy search for cheap booze—and even cheaper thrills—the intrepid trio will run into fast-food floozies, crooked cops and a close encounter with a doubting would-be divorcée (Long) that will change Woody’s life forever. Wonderfully directed by Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential, The Bedroom Window) with a screenplay by B.W.L. Norton (Convoy).

Love this movie, waited years for the blu ray. It’s a good release, although it appears to have been taken from an old TV or theatrical print, definitely not the negative. So it’s a little soft looking as blu rays go, but still a world of improvement over the VHS and DVD copies. There has been some confusion as to the aspect ratio of the original film, caused by an erroneous (and since corrected) IMDb specification, as well as from MGM’s disclaimer at the opening of the 4:3 ratio DVD from 2001: “This film has been altered in the following way: it has been formatted to fit your TV.” That notice usually means a film was shot in widescreen but cropped down to 4:3 for the old TV sets. However, the original theatrical trailer for the film is in 4:3 — and in the full film, the lens flare bokeh in the blowtorch scene is round rather than oval, a telltale confirmation that no anamorphics were used during filming. The film has a lot going for it – a young attractive cast, sex, full frontal nudity, great cars, great music and a few good laughs. Right up there with “Porky’s,” “The Wanderers,” and “Porky’s Revenge.” Love it and hope you will, too!!!

I had been waiting to see this movie again. A group of high school kids impetuously take off for Mexico, hoping to do “something” about their “virginity.” They find themselves in a world of raunchiness, bopping around, running into a wayward cop,, who likes the group’s stunning ’57 Chevy convertible. They hit the bars, meet some eager ladies, but it wasn’t clear what happened in those seamy places. One kid, “spider,” (John Stockwell), finds himself in a crowded jail with some already-angry US military goons. There is a hilarious episode when one of the kids meets a hot-looking girl only to be set upon by her brother in a jalopy. This turns into a wild car chase through Mexican streets, chased by the wayward cop who wants the ’57 Chevy. They cleverly make it to the border after the authorities take the ’57 apart looking for whatever. BTW, John Stockwell looks good, and so does Tom Cruise, and so do the others! It’s a wild romp!

This edition has cut out a thirty second scene due to the PC movement in Hollywood, so four stars rating. The comical scene involves the very first chingata the boys pay to enter and promptly leave when they find out the barker was not lying when he said the establishment has the dirtiest and rsunchiest sl*ts in all of Tiajuana. Shelley Long and Tom Cruz were unknown to me back when the movie was first released.

reason i wanted this movie -it is a classic i think. however the boys did not go to Tijuana Mexio. They went to Mexicai Mexico which is right across from Calexico California in the Imperial Valley and hotels and bars etc where they went were movie stages set up in Calexico. If you look real close at the scenes you will see a movie marque advertising adult movies in English. also during the chase scene they drove by the old Cooks market in Calexico. The scenes of the drugstores and uphostery shops did appear to be shot in Mexicali. Also the fountain scenes were shot in Calexico so this movie brought back some memories and is why i rated it a 5.

..you just can’t take this thing serious. It may have a then-unknown Tom Cruise in it, but..LOL..u can’t take him serious either. Points on for Shelley Long: she was and still is one of Tinseltowns most underrated sexy actresses. Bonus points for a somewhat wired (but hilarious) Jackie Earle Haley, prior to his jumpstarted acting career as Rorschach in THE WATCHMEN..

I bought this (luckily used for very cheap) after reading some of these reviews on Amazon. I didn’t laugh at anything; the characters were too painfully one-dimensional. Even Cruise in an early part of his career (although post-Outsiders, which was a pretty good performance) was wooden. The story is pretty standard fare for the “teen adventure comedy” and everything ends on an upbeat note.A strange thing was that I thought it was set in or around 1983, when it was made – yes, Dave drives a ’57 Chevy, but a lot of motorhead kids in my high school (in 1983) did similar. I did notice the Tijuana cop drove a 50’s style car (not sure of model) but just assumed that public services in Tijuana couldn’t afford anything more modern. But at the end, when they were queued up at customs, ALL the cars were 50s-types. I thought perhaps it was going to be some joke about a classic car rally – but since there wasn’t, I can only conclude that this movie was taking place in the late ’50s. You wouldn’t know it from the story though – only from the cars.Anyway, even if a TV channel was showing it for free, it’s not worth watching. Lame, lame, lame. Watch “The Night Before” starring Keanu Reeves and you will be much more entertained (and intrigued) in a movie that has a similar kind of “high school kids in trouble after hours” feel.

WAS NOT A GOOD STORY
I didn’t like the story it was too plain not enough hot rods in it, like the movie ” two lane black top” or the movie Hot Rod or American Graffiti. —– Sincerely — John
