A lot of the complaints on here are from people that don’t read the manual. It states multiple times over that maintenance must be done on the unit every three months. These people aren’t doing the maintenance, so of course their unit is quitting after six+ months! My model works great, and I’m so happy to have something for my atlantic pygmy octopus tank for so cheap.

I’m not going to reiterate on the general deficiencies that others have pointed out due to the design of the skimmer. But I will make note of a couple easy modifications I made to it that made it better to use.The air intake is the proper diameter for an air tube to easily attach to, so I attached a short 2″ air tube to it to reduce the chance of gunk getting into it. You could even have an air tube coming from outside the tank, but do not pump air into the tube (the internal pump draws air itself) and keep in mind if it’s too long the skimmer may not get enough air. The air tube is pushed out of the way by the collection cup, so if you use an air tube you’ll need to be careful to not disconnect it when reattaching the collection cup, you probably want to use a soft rubber or plastic tube rather than a hard plastic tube. I wish the unit had the air intake more off to the side so it does not get pushed against by the collection cup. Attaching a short air tube had no noticeable negative impact on the performance of the unit.Since I use this in a shrimp aquarium, I used aquatic glue and a square cut of 120 stainless steel mesh to guard the intake and prevent shrimp from getting sucked in (most notably baby shrimp). I roughed up the edges around the water intake using a file prior to gluing it on to make sure the mesh attached well and would not come loose. The mesh did not make any noticeable reduction in performance and the skimmer still collects plenty of protein (the collection cup water is still quite yellow/orange). The mesh does very slowly collect small debris though, so in the long term I may need to brush that off at some point.I wish the skimmer came with a knob extension for those that are willing to cut holes in the top of the aquarium lid to more easily adjust the skimmer, but I 3D printed one.My skimmer runs pretty loud, hopefully that’s normal and not a sign that the pump is wearing down faster than it should, but so far so good.

First, I have had experience in the marine aquarium hobby for almost 8 years now. That being said I have always had smaller tanks and I am by no means and expert. I did my research on this product and several others for about a month now and they all have similar complaints between noise, micro bubbles, break in period, fine tuning, and most importantly production. This was recommended to me by a local aquarium store for my 36g bowfront even though it is recommended for up to 30 gallons. The concept every protein skimmer is based on is very simple so the fact that this is small or self contained should not discourage you. Here are the main points I would like to make clear:-The air intake is right at the water line and will get water in it causing the gargling noise everyone hates. The mod everyone has spoken about on YouTube is very simple and easy, took me 5 minutes. Just be careful not to crack the plastic. Its unfortunate that when buying a brand new product you need to make immediate mods to it but that just the facts. I purchased a black air hose and air control valve from a local pet store. This solves you noise problems and allows you to regulate your air very easily.- Even with the water control fully open my cup still continued to flood but again with the air control valve its very easy to adjust and was fixed within the first minute of use.-Noise from vibration is almost nonexistent, very similar to a HOB filter but because the skimmer is completely submerged, the noise is dampened.-This skimmer does produce several micro bubbles, especially in the beginning but adding simple and cheap filter floss or filter pad around the outflow or behind the skimmer (in refugium) solves your problems.-The flow control nob is difficult to turn but I leave it fully open and just adjust air intake using the valve. The fill cup is also difficult to remove without moving the entire protein skimmer because the suction cups that come with this unit are very poorly designed. They suction to the walls fine but pop off the bracket very easily. Once you get the skimmer in place and running right I would not touch it. Use a turkey baster to remove skimmate. Very easy and simple solution-Finally and most important, THE SKIMMER WORKS! I use this skimmer within my HOB refugium and it has been pulling gunk and dirty water from my tank from the first few minutes I set it up. I thought my water was very clean and crystal clear so I was surprised to see how much “stuff” was coming out. Break in period was about a day for me and only had to make minor adjustments to air intake. Because I already had filter pads at the exit of the refugium I didn’t have to deal with micro bubbles entering my tank. I have heard that this skimmer is sensitive to water fluctuation but I have not seen this at all even when I leave it high or low. Luckily the water level in the refugium stays very stable so I don’t have to deal with this “problem” as much. For the money and the lack of products out on the market, this is a good buy. Requires a little work (30 minutes of dialing in) and some extra parts but it works great, is constructed pretty well, doesn’t seem fragile, and is a very simple unit. Its easy to clean and I would recommend it to anyone with a nano tank, preferably positioned in the back of a tank

I was a bit cautious of this purchase based upon some of the reviews. In the saltwater hobby world, we can become quite snobbish on product. I was pleasantly surprised how well this works (sometimes too well). I check my water very frequently and have had to make adjustments with this because it cleans extremely well and you need a little “dirt” in the saltwater marine environment. It is easy to clean, disassemble, and reassemble. Suction is pretty goood as well. The only complaint is I wish it were a bit quieter.

Buen producto…ideal para mini reefs. Hace un poco de ruido en la toma de aire pero facilmente solucionable.

Great little skimmer!
This skimmer is a great little work horse. I have had it running in a 20 gallon nano for almost 1 year now. Took just about over 1 week to break in before it started to produce nice skim mate. Dialing it in is pretty easy too. Just turn that little knob. Don’t even have to get you hands wet. The only draw back it that it tends to gurgle a little. Doesn’t bug me but it might bother you.As a user of product I do have a couple pointers….First off I wouldn’t put this in a 30 gallon tank unless you are lightly stocked which in most cases you aren’t. So just don’t. My 20 gallon is well stocked and this thing produces skim almost 18 hours a day. Wouldn’t handle a 30 gallon.Second, your water line CANNOT be too high. If you have it too high the skimmer cup with fill up rather quickly even on its lowest setting. The water level affects the skimmer. I have it where the outlet of the skimmer is about 1/3 to 1/2 exposed above water. This way on the lowest setting I get very dry if any skim at all and on the highest setting I have a wetter skim.
